The pavement ended, and the street dissolved into a rough road that was barely discernable in the darkness. Tess saw no light whatsoever other than the stars twinkling in the black velvet sky. “Cindy, I don’t think…” Her voice trailed off when she spotted a pale bluish glow in the distance. “Is that it?” she asked, straining forward to see.

“That’s it. Wait till you see. It’s beautiful,” Cindy said, smiling at her over her shoulder, her face dimly lit by the dash light.

Cindy parked the car beneath the portico in front of the large double doors made of frosted white glass that was obviously the entrance to the building. The pale blue glow Tess had seen in the distance was from the lighting hidden beneath the edge of the roof and in the cactus beds that decorated the front of the building. The color gave the white stucco building a cool and soothing look. Sort of serene.

“Let’s go get you settled, and then we’re off.” Cindy opened the driver’s door.

Tess gingerly opened her door and got out of the car, nervous but also a little excited. She hadn’t done anything for just herself in the past year. She was well overdue.

Cindy and Barb each linked an arm through one of Tess’s, and with a bounce in their walk, they guided her through the front door.
