ABOUT DEE
I write because I’m
compelled to. Too many ideas are floating in my head and I
have to expunge them from my mind and transfer them to
paper. In the three years I have been writing seriously, I
have written four published novels and three published short
stories with more to be published by year end, and a half
dozen in the works.
When it comes to erotica, I write only what I consider
straight sex, between two and sometime three f/m/f partners.
I have written f/f. To me,
sex is a celebration of life and I treat it as such.
I live in Arizona, in the somewhat sleepy but growing
town of Cave Creek which is thirty miles north of downtown
Phoenix. My wife and I are both from Las Vegas where we have
lived for over thirty years. That is why many of my writings
have a Las Vegas connection.
INTERVIEW
Q: What genre(s) do you write?
A: I’ve
pretty much stayed in various sub-genres of contemporary.
Contemporary erotic romance, erotic chick-lit, suspense, action
thrillers. I did write one erofantasy short story and I’d like
to do more. Q: What
do you do on a typical writing day? A:
Write, write, and write. I’ve pretty much given up TV and movies
and have substantially cut back on my reading. I have a day job,
which impedes my writing to some extent, so I’ve evolved into
some rather weird hours. I retire between eight and nine and
awake between two and three. This early morning, quiet time is
perfect for writing. Q: Do you have a dream
lover – and what does he or she look like?
A: If I was a gay man or a straight woman, I might think Hugh
Jackman, or Orlando Bloom was interesting, but since I’m not,
I’d have to say a composite of all my leading ladies, who not
surprisingly are all pretty much good looking. Of course my
wife, with her fantastic legs, is in the mix as well. Q:
Do you outline your books or just start writing?
A: I guess I really wing it. I’ve never started a book knowing
how it was going end, let along where it was going to end. I
start with a simple idea and start typing as if I was following
an unknown path. Hopefully, I end up in a beautiful place with a
lagoon and tropical foliage and not a landfill.
Q: What do you do to relax? A: Why
silly. I write. I've never been happier since I started writing.
In addition, if you were to write me and tell how much you
enjoyed one of my books, I would be on cloud nine.
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
A: This is strange. A little over three
years ago, my wife was out of town taking some classes and I had
an idea for the beginning of a story. so I sat down and typed it
out and then I typed some more. I never knew where it was going
but I didn’t stop until I had a ninety-five thousand word
action/thriller. I never realized I wanted to be a writer until
I started. Then I was hooked. I found the idea of creating
stories including people, and events fascinating. If you think
about it, it’s almost Godlike. Hey maybe I ought to look into
that as a story. People in one of my books worshipping their
creator—Dee Dawning. Wouldn’t that be bizarre?
Q: Do you think of yourself as a storyteller or a story
builder? A: A storyteller. Definitely. I
start with an idea and follow where the story leads me. I have
never started a book knowing or having even a vague idea how it
would end. Nevertheless, I think my endings are a strong point
in my writing. Q: How do you keep the sex
fresh? How do you keep it from feeling repetitive from story to
story? A: Sex scenes? People write sex
scenes in their stories? LOL. Seriously, that is an excellent
question. You didn’t think that one up just for me did you? LOL.
I’m sure you know sex/love scenes are the hardest and most time
consuming part of writing. A good sex scene is a creation—a
labor of love. Do I write about sex the way I have sex. Hell no!
I write about sex the way I would like to experience it. The
good thing about my writing is it’s so wide-ranging, that it
forces the sex scenes to be varied as well. I have been credited
with my fair share of torrid sex scenes. Q:
What was your biggest challenge in writing your book(s)?
A: Dead ends and new ideas. I have a
graveyard of partially written novels. Some I stopped because I
didn’t like the path I’d taken, never bothering to fix them and
others I set aside to work on a hot new idea.
Q: What do you like to do when you're not writing
A: Gosh, not much. Maybe I’m daydreaming up plots, shooting or
catching bad guys, helping a friend out of a jam or maybe I’m
making love to a beautiful woman. You did know I’m a man, didn’t
you? LOL Q: Is there anything you would
like to add? A: Yes, thank you. I’d like
to address my readers and would be readers. It’s you I write
for. Your approval, your praise. It keeps me going. It
inspires me. If you like what I wrote, tell me about it. If you
didn’t like something, I want to hear it too. I take my
compliments wherever I can get them. Some reviewers have said my books
are a joy to read. To those who have yet to read me, a word.
Yes, I write about sex, but I won’t get into extreme sex. I
would never write anything demeaning to women. Like I've said, I
adore women. I consider myself an entertainer. People say my
books are entertaining and that’s just fine. If you read one of
my books and are entertained, the next time you want to be
entertained, you’ll probably grab another Dee Dawning book.
They’re all different, but then again they’re all the
same—entertaining. |
