The car lights flicked and went out at the same time the engine died. Eve Denton struggled to control the car, its tires hydroplaning on the slippery roadway and sliding sideways. It plummeted into the thick grass on the shoulder and came to a stop. She did the only thing she could. Collapse, crying on the steering wheel.
Rain angrily pelted the car in sheets, as if joining in her wail fest. She cursed herself for the umpteenth time for leaving her cell phone plugged in at the house. When she needed it the most, there was no way to call for help. The whole day had been like this, ever since the river flooded its banks and drove her from her home.
By the time residents were allowed back in, Eve seriously doubted there would be anything left to salvage. Not with the angry look of the water. Most folks had chosen the Interstate for escape. Thinking she could circumvent a traffic jam, she’d been stupid enough to take a state route. A desolate one through Bum Fuck, Egypt. In the middle of swamp land and desolation, she had only herself to blame. Now what? She didn’t have any idea.
As if on cue, the lights of an approaching car appeared in her rearview mirror. Torn between pretending she wasn’t in the car and desperate for help, she opted to try and wave it down. No serial killer in his right mind would be on the road in this deluge. She grabbed her emergency flashers out of her glove box, along with a flashlight, and, pulling the hood of her slicker over her head, opened the door and got out. Turning on the flashers, Eve placed them at the rear of the car and then waved the flashlight back and forth as she stood waiting for the car, hopefully, to come to a halt.
With a long exhale of relief, she saw it was stopping. The red truck put on its flashing lights behind her and pulled to the side of the road. A man climbed out of the cab and approached her. His tall muscular frame was highlighted by his headlights. Nice build.
“Flat tire?” he screamed.
“No, electrical. Probably the battery.” Water poured down her face.
“You’re not gonna get a tow truck out here now. The bridge is out about a mile from here. And nothing’s behind us for about…”
“Thirty miles. I know.” She sighed. “Can you call the police?”
He nodded. “Sure but I can tell you they’re busy. Ten-car pileup on the Interstate. A boat load of folks got hurt.” He nodded behind him. “Heard it on my scanner.”
At least she wasn’t injured. Maybe she ought to be happy she took this road after all. “I don’t guess there’s a motel ahead?”
“Nope, but my pub is. A friend and I own it. I was just going to help him clean up. Bar closed an hour ago. We have a back room. You can stay there for the night if you like.”
She nodded. “Let’s go there for now. If things let up, maybe I’ll try the police again.”
He shrugged. “Suit yourself. Come on.”
Once inside his truck, he threw her a towel from the back seat. “Here, if you want to dry off.”
“Thanks.” She ran it over her face and arms, smelling the light fragrance of fabric softener and male musk. She breathed it in, a prickle of arousal tickling her spine. How long had it been since she’d delighted in the simple scent of a man? For the first time she looked up at her rescuer, running her eyes down his perfectly toned body and then back to his face. His hair was wet, but was definitely blond. His nose was straight, not previously broken. Good sign, considering he owned a bar in the middle of nowhere. There was nothing she didn’t like. He was rugged and rousing, and just the set of his jaw turned her on.
He turned as he seemed to sense her scrutiny. Holy shit. She felt the heat pool between her legs. What gorgeous, pale gray eyes.
