It had been a month since she’d lost Jonah, but it still felt like yesterday. When the pack had attacked him, she’d been heartbroken, knowing that it wouldn’t end well. No one could go up against Hunter and win, except for his brother Logan. Jonah hadn’t stood a chance.
And now, she found herself back in the Fairy kingdom, courtesy of Prince Rhys. Granted, he’d been following Jonah’s orders by taking her away from the fight, and getting her away from the other werewolves, but she still felt like she’d abandoned him by coming here. At least Rhys had allowed her to bring Jonah to Faeryland and bury him on the palace grounds.
Alex took Rhys’s hand in hers and laced their fingers together. “Thank you for being so patient with me this past month. Jonah made me promise not to mourn him, but I think I needed to, at least a little.”
“If you need more time…”
She shook her head. “No, it’s time for me to move on. It’s what he would want.”
“There are some things we need to discuss. I’ve held off, but maybe now is the right time.”
“To talk about what?”
“I know you spent time in Faeryland before, but there’s still a lot you don’t understand about our culture and laws. There’s one in particular we need to discuss.”
“Rhys…”
“Let’s go sit in the rose garden. I have a feeling you’ll need to be seated for this talk.”
Alex followed him in curiosity. After they’d sat on a stone chair, she leaned forward and rested her arms on the small table. Rhys stretched out his long legs and folded his arms over his chest. She calmly watched him, waiting for him to start talking. When silence still reigned moments later, she sighed.
“Whatever it is, just tell me, Rhys.”
“It isn’t that simple. I guess I should start with your guards.”
“Yes. Why do I have guards when I didn’t need any before?”
“For one, I don’t trust the wolf pack. If they find a way in to Faeryland like before, they could try to abduct you.”
“Okay, first of all, I don’t think two wolves can make a pack. And honestly, Hunter only saw me once. Why would he try to find me? Let’s not forget how much time has passed there already.”
“Alex, he killed your husband. I think it’s safe to say that he wants you as his mate. He doesn’t know that time moves differently here. It’s possible he’s still searching for you.”
“Just use the scrying mirror to see.”
He nodded. “Fine. I’ll do that.”
“And the other reason?”
“I don’t trust Kieran. He wasn’t happy that you got away, despite his act at the end of your stay. My brother can be ruthless when he wants to be. All faeries can, myself included.”
“He said he was still interested, but I can’t see him doing anything underhanded.”
He lifted a brow. “Really? He’s used magic on you before, abducted you, but you don’t think he’d play unfairly?”
“That was different.”
“You’re right. It’s worse this time.”
“How is it worse?”
Rhys rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but last time you were already pregnant when you came here, and by a werewolf at that. This time, you’ll be pregnant with the heir to Fairyland. Kieran isn’t married, which means he’ll try to steal you from me.”
A chill settled over Alex. “In other words, he would want your wife no matter who she was, just to have the heir to the kingdom.”
“Probably, but my wife isn’t just anyone. I think he really did care about you, Alex. It’s going to make him more driven in his goal to obtain you as his bride.”
She looked out over the garden, her thoughts jumbled. “So it’s a race to see who can bed me and impregnate me. Is that it? I’m a prize cow?”
Rhys stood and pulled her into his arms. “Alex, that is not what our marriage is about. Father gave his permission for me to marry you while you were in the human world, and I may have tricked you and for that I’m sorry, but I genuinely wanted you as my wife. The moment I saw you, I knew you were meant to be mine.”
“For how long? Until you get tired of me and decide to take a mistress?”
He caressed her cheek. “I’ll never take another woman to my bed as long as there is breath in your lungs. I swear it to you.”
“Rhys, you can’t know what you’ll do in a hundred years. For that matter, I’m just human. I may be dead in less time than that, and old and ugly long before I die.”
He grinned. “You’ll age the way I age, and you’ll live for hundreds of years my princess. And yes, I can make such a vow, because I’ve never seen a woman who could equal you in beauty and spirit.”
“Rhys, I…”
He silenced her with a kiss.
