What the hell?
Raincoat man pushed his Victoria onto the tracks and then without a backwards glance ran up the stairs toward the exit.
Angus' police training took over. He could hear the approaching train and without a thought to his own safety, he jumped down onto the tracks. She lay sprawled out crossways on the rails. How was he going to get her up and onto the platform before the train came? There was no time. He tugged at her prone body so now she was parallel to the track.
Frantically, he knew he didn't have the time or the energy to get her back up onto the platform. He pulled her down into the deep drainage ditch, which ran between the rails for the train. A giant rat ran by, not stopping to look at the strangers in his domain, instead smart enough to get out of the way of the approaching vehicle.
Oh God. He shifted his head and conked it on the metal track, inhaling the diesel fumes and warm metal. To avoid the gagging sensation in his stomach, he held his breath, an arm covering her protectively. He said the Lord's Prayer and gave a quick mention to Saint Christopher, hoping to cover all the bases. The subway cars whizzed over his head brushing against his hair. He sucked in his stomach, wanting to make himself as small as possible. He was definitely going to hit the gym when this was over.
