Excerpt“Of course, you. We’re meeting them at the Parkway at seven. Andrew’s sisters are both involved with men, so you should really have a date. I left you a message this morning. Didn’t you get it?” Talia drummed perfectly manicured nails on the side of the glass. “Seven o’clock tonight?” Trisha thought of how handsome Rico would be in a suit with his broad shoulders and dark hair and eyes. The thought was immediately quashed by how she'd feel introducing him to people she didn’t even know on such short notice. Especially considering Talia’s snobbery would be in full gear in an effort to impress her new sisters-in-law to be. Not to mention, Rico had said some not-so-charitable things in reference to the bridezilla Trish was working so hard to please. Explaining to him an hour before she marched him into an already uncomfortable situation that she was related to bridezilla didn’t strike her as particularly tactful. Her fingers tightened on the glass. She shook her head, sorry she hadn’t told Rico the first time they met that the spoiled, demanding bride tossing away all the money on flowers was her own sister. There was still plenty of time to smooth things over before the wedding, but it wouldn’t happen tonight. “Talia, I can’t come up with a date on such short notice.” No doubt Talia and her snooty friends would get a kick out of Trish’s lack of social connections. Talia’s brittle laughter rang like pebbles flung at crystal. “I wonder how you and I grew up in the same town, never mind the same house, Trish. Almendra is full of eligible bachelors. Why here’s one right now.” She cast a cat-like smile in Mike’s direction. The ball of ice in Trisha’s belly expanded, numbing her fingers and toes. “Talia, no!” Trisha hissed, but she’d spoken too late. |
