"Sal? Sorry to bug you, but do you think you could pick up Sarai today at school? I got this damned project and..."
"I got it, amico." Salvatore Rizzo shifted gears in his 2006 forest green Mazda Miata, glancing briefly at traffic as he completed a not-so-legal U-turn at the next stoplight. Sal had been merely cruising anyway, so didn't mind the detour.
Not that I could ever say 'No' to him. Now or ever.
Sal chuckled as he heard his friend let out sigh of relief. "Thanks a lot, Sal. You don't know how much I appreciate everything you do for me."
You could thank me by letting me do everything to you... came the forbidden thought, making Sal grimace. Quickly, he squashed the rising desire in his gut, refusing to give in to his usual self-torture whenever it came to Darshan Lyang. "Yeah, no problem, Dar. I got your back. Besides, Sarai loves me, it's always good to see the little rug rat."
Laughter. Wonderful, beautiful laughter. Darshan's voice came through like liquid gold: rich, smooth, and rare. If Sal spent the rest of his life doing nothing but hearing Darshan speak, he would die a happy man. "That she does. I'll make it up to you. I can hear cars." A pause. "Damn, I didn't catch you at a bad time did I?"
"Nope, you're good. Stop worrying." Because Dar would, to an unnatural degree. Knowing he hadn't always been stricken with anxiety hurt Sal, reminded him of how he had failed the one person he gave a damn about. "Just cook me something, and we'll call it even."
More laughter. If only Darshan knew what the sound did to him, how he treasured those now rare moments. "It's a date."
I wish.
"I'll be home at around eight or nine," Darshan continued, oblivious to Sal's mental musings. "Is that alright? If not, I can call Emma when she gets out of school and..."
"It's fine, Darshan." Sal rolled his eyes, switching lanes. He smirked at the old woman who gave him the one fingered salute as he cut her off to make a sharp turn. Old folks were so irritable. "I do not mind, I repeat, do not mind watching Sarai."
"Right, right, I get it. Sorry." Darshan drawled, sounding amused. "I swear I'll make it up to you, Sal. She gets off at--"
"At four. Yeah, I know. I've picked her up enough. How long have we been friends again? Since middle school."
A sigh. "I know it's just... nothing. Been having a bad feeling is all. I'll see you later on tonight. Thanks again, Sal, you're a life saver."
Ending the call, the speakers switched back to the radio, the station playing some sort of commercial about medicine Sal didn't even attempt to pay attention to. In another hour, Darshan's little girl would be getting out of school. The drive would take thirty minutes from his current location.
Might as well just head on over there then. He mused and fiddled with the stations until he found one that played alternative rock. Two lights later and he was heading up the ramp toward the highway, his thoughts shifting over to Darshan. A long time friend, the two had been through a lot together. From Darshan's 'coming out', to his arranged marriage with his now ex-wife, Jin Ae, a beautiful, but unpleasant, Korean woman.
Their marriage had been one of convenience and Darshan, wanting to please his parents, had agreed. Most of his newly acquired bad habits had come from his ex-wife and her mountains upon mountains of drama. As Dar's best friend, Sal felt he could have done more, been stronger, when everything had gone to hell after Sarai had been born.
At the same time, Sarai's birth signaled the beginning of Darshan's freedom and independence. His little girl became the only person who mattered to him, not even his overbearing father could do much to sway Darshan when Sarai was involved. When Jin Ae refused to stop being irresponsible and childish, their marriage had quickly ended.
Throughout all the fights, violence, and pain, Sal had tried his best to remain by Darshan's side. All those years of holding back his jealousy toward Jin Ae as she took for granted what he desired most in the world. The self-loathing and sense of failure he felt whenever he had looked into Darshan's tired face, unable to bring the other man any peace.
The radio began to blare out a heavy metal song he wasn't particularly fond of, dragging Sal from his thoughts. His hand slipped through his thick black hair in frustration and he sighed.
Sal loved both Darshan and Sarai, of course in completely different ways. Now almost ten years old, Sarai's existence happened to be the only bright light in Darshan's life. Helping to raise her--as well as he could being 'the best friend'--made Sal see Sarai as his own. He could never have Darshan's love, Sal was too afraid of ruining their friendship, but in his mind the three of them were as much of a family as he'd ever have.
