Dark hair fell over his forehead. Sleepy eyes, gone so dark they smoldered, bored into her. Their lips so close, they all but brushed.
All the air had apparently been sucked from the room because Josie suddenly found it difficult to breathe.
“What’s wrong with you?” he asked.
“Me? Nothing.” Her brows knitted. “The bed was shaking. Having a place in L.A., I figured it was tremors. An earthquake.”
“Nope, just me, darlin’.” He grinned.
When she sat up, the sheet clutched around her, every muscle in her body shouted a reminder of yesterday’s screw-up. “What are you doing in my bed? How long have you been here?”
“Not long. And I didn’t touch you. Believe me, you’d have known if anything happened. I like my ladies awake and willing.” His grin deepened. “Making love isn’t a spectator sport in my neck of the woods.”
Embarrassed heat raced across her face and chest, raising her temperature ten degrees.
The sleepy mist lifted from his eyes, and he laughed, an easy, warm sound. “No quake here, Josie. I wanted to get the room ready for housekeeping. Figured it’d be best for right now if our marriage looked like the real thing.”
She threw him a questioning look.
“Darlin’, most brides and grooms muss the bed on their wedding night,” he whispered, as though he shared a secret. “Get my drift? Didn’t seem right for the cleaning lady to come in and find the bed looking like it hadn’t been put to good use.”
Heat flooded through her again, from her toes to the top of her head. Oh, yes. Only too well could she picture that long, lean body sliding along her own. Picture those lips burning a hot trail along her skin, branding her. She could almost taste...
