Sharon’s running out of time and money. She’s got a plan for how to save herself and her two children after their deadbeat dad and the rest of their family have deserted them. But what will her contingency plan do to her soul and the souls of her children?

Mr. Mann carries burdens most couldn’t -- the visible, odd arrangement of connected boxes on his back, and the hidden guilt for deeds done long, long ago. The end may be in sight, but not a happy one if Sharon chooses the wrong path.

Someone’s contingency plan will be put into effect, but whether it leads to a happily ever after or dark despair will require intricate maneuverings by the white witches of the Neighborhood. But even they can’t stop a good woman from going wrong.

The man did indeed look like he’d stepped out of a fairy tale, though his clothes were dirty and worse for wear. But no one else was going around their city dressed in lederhosen or anything else he was wearing.

“We don’t make fun of the way people are born,” Sharon said as gently as she could. “The man can’t help his size. And size doesn’t make you good or bad, any more than having blue eyes or black hair means anything about how you are inside.”

True enough. Her husband had both and look how that turned out.
“His beard touches his feet! And he’s wearing a house!” Maya said in the voice all three-year-olds think is for family only but in reality booms like the child is on a loudspeaker.

Sharon’s cheeks got hot. There was no way the man couldn’t have heard. Sure enough, he turned toward them, looking severe. He held a sign: ‘The End is Near’.

It did look like he was wearing if not a house then a huge array of trunks of differing size, all attached with a series of intricate straps. There were some levers, as well, and some of the boxes appeared to have windows. He was probably at least a little crazy and homeless, but she didn’t want to say this to the children. However, his sign gave her the smooth explanation.

“That’s his contingency plan.”
