The doorbell rang. “I’ll get it,” Derek walked into the living room. His heart froze when he opened the door. Parked in front of his house was one of the Cameron Hummers, all black with tinted windows. Standing on the porch were two of Cameron’s security force. He’d seen them both around the building, a man and a woman. They wore the typical Cameron garb for their profession: black suits with white shirts, although the woman wore a well-fitted skirted suit. Sunglasses hid their eyes and emotions, if they had such.
“Derek?” He felt Kate’s hand on his arm. “Is everything okay?”
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Wilkins,” the man said, his voice and smile surprisingly charming. “We apologize for interrupting you, but Mr. Cameron wanted us to deliver this,” he held out an envelope.
Derek took the envelope and opened it, scanning the inside of the ornate invitation.
“What is it?” Kate took the card and read it.
“You will be attending, yes?” the man asked.
“Y-yes, of course, please express my thanks,” Derek said. Refusal is not an option.
“Derek, it’s an invitation to a cocktail party at Geoffrey Cameron’s penthouse!” Kate’s excitement was evident.
The man snapped his fingers and a younger man, dressed in a gray double-breasted suit stepped forward. He looked familiar to Derek.
“Good evening Mr. Wilkins, do you remember me? Ricky?”

Derek watched as she removed a shoe from the box. “Oh, it’s a pair of shoes.”

“More like insane than generous,” she chuckled. She placed the shoe back in the box with its mate and removed the largest package from the bag. “It’s pretty,” Derek said.
“Pretty? Derek, it’s a Michael Kors. This stuff must have cost thousands of dollars. And your boss simply sent it over here? Wait!” She looked at the shoe box and at the dress label, “And in my sizes? Did you have something to do with this?”
Derek held up his hand, “Honestly, I didn’t know anything until they showed up here. Trust me; Mr. Geoffrey Cameron is a man who does whatever he wants and is used to getting his own way.” He pointed to an envelope in the dress box, “There’s something else in there.”
Kate took the envelope and carefully folded the dress back in the box. “This just gets better and better.” She held up the card from the envelope, “It’s a day pass to Eden on the day of the party.”
Derek scrunched his eyebrows, “Eden?”
“It’s only the most exclusive and expensive spa in town. Hell, I don’t even know anyone who’s been there. They’re going to pamper me all day and then do my hair and makeup for the party.” She shook her head, “This is all so, so…”
