Through the truck window, the creek whispered and murmured to itself. The cicadas were calling out raucously to each other.
“Why did you ask me to dance?” Grace asked softly.
“Seemed like a good idea at the time.”
“Was it? A good idea?”
“I haven’t decided yet.”
Grace sighed and looked down at her lap. “Why did you come after me, Ben?
“Hell if I know—I can’t seem to stay away from you. I keep trying to take care of you when you won’t even take care of yourself. Hard to believe you let that asshole lay all over you; blowing cigarette smoke in your face after all the problems you’ve had with your lungs. What the hell were you thinking, letting him do it?”
Grace looked back up at him angrily. “Why can't you just leave me alone, Ben? You don't like me. You don't approve of me. Why did you even bother?"
"Damn it, Grace. Maybe I was hoping one day you might get a little common sense."
"Fuck you, Ben!"
"Don't knock it till you've tried it, sugar."
She looked at him in shock, and her mouth fell open a little. Ben figured she’d probably been sure she was going to get another lecture on using such bad language and was trying to get a rise out of him.
She recovered quickly, saying in a smart tone, "What makes you think I'd be interested?"
"You put out for every other guy you meet; why not me?"
Her eyes filled with tears. Jumping from the truck, she stalked furiously down the dirt road. He caught her before she made it more than a few yards, grabbed her arm, and pulled her around to face him.
"Oh, the truth hurts, huh?" he asked angrily.
Grace slapped him viciously across the face and drew back her hand to strike him again. He grabbed her hand and pushed her roughly against the back bumper, as she gasped and struggled with him, out of breath and furious.
“You're going to listen to me!” he said. He shook her slightly, and she started to cry, tears streaming down her face.
Everything changed when he saw her tears, and he pulled her into his arms and held her close to him, bending his head to kiss her with ferocity.
