Doreen slowly circled the shiny red sports car, her high-heels clicking on the hard floor and the sound echoing in the bad acoustics of the showroom. Corvette, the ultimate symbol of a mid-life crisis, right? Did looking it over mean she was having a mid-life crisis? Hell no! No way would she live to be one hundred. That’s right, damn-it, she was fifty. Today! The Big Five-O, and not the Hawaii type. She didn’t care. She wasn’t going to stand on a street corner and announce it to the world, but there it was. Fifty! Why was it people made such big deals of the decade milestones? The Big Four O—The Big Five O. Next the Big Six O, and then what? Retirement? The old folks home? Rock until she shrivels like an old prune and dies? “I’ll be damned if I do that!” She actually said that out loud. Before, all had been only screaming thoughts—the kind of thoughts that shriek inside one’s head until the brain hurts.
The young salesman stood off at a distance. Had he heard the little outburst of a few seconds before? What was he thinking? Here’s this crazy old bitch, wasting my time. There were no other prospective customers in the showroom to take his time so would it matter if she dallied for a few more minutes even a half-hour? She had the day off for her birthday, so she didn’t need to be anywhere.
She took a second quick glance in his direction. He was still watching her, standing rather smugly, she thought. Did he think she might slip it in her pocket and walk out with it? He was dressed in a cardigan sweater and tan slacks. A little surprising, most car salesmen wore regular business suits, white shirts, ties and jackets. Another glance told her that he was well suited to the conflicting attire. The cardigan was stretched wide by broad shoulders and tapered to a narrow waist. He had a thick head of curly brown hair that just barely covered the tops of his ears. Not half bad. He was about thirty-five, yeah, not half bad at all. Now if he would just turn around so she could see his ass. She was sure by the way those tan slacks were tailored he would have a good one. Ah, if only she was twenty years younger…
