Prologue
In the ice room, the color had left a long time ago. The place was utterly devoid of shade or tint and was cold enough to stop Fire. Where before the passion of amber and gold had hummed in Trystyn Morgan's veins, now only the raw energy of white remained, cut and twisted away from him with the precision of a sharp blade. Time had stopped meaning one single thing to him. Was it days or months, or even years, he had been in this place? He had people who kept him alive: there was pain in his arms and thighs from needles and pinpricks and tubes disappearing out of his sight. In a good moment he tried to look around him, to see beyond the sea of white and tendrils of raw Fire, but he couldn't move. Suspended as he was, floating without the stress of being held, he knew it was Fire keeping his feet from the ground.
Amber spoke to him sometimes. Its voice was frail, weak, as close to nothing as it could be. It was in him, deep, hidden, a small spark of something left inside him. Whoever held him here, whatever monster caused him to be in the ice room couldn't see the tiniest of flame centered in his heart. Otherwise it would be taken as well. Not enough to enable him to get away, it nevertheless reminded him of another life. Every so often the color mixed with memories of blue or green, but they never stayed long enough for him to believe they were real. It was these memories that caused others to enter the room, out of his peripheral vision, and to stab needles, sparking pain into his spine. The memories faded then, and the ice room closed in on him with its nothingness.
Today, tonight, tomorrow was different. Red had intruded into his waking dreams. The red of a brother? It entwined with the glimpses of blue and green and his own tiny amber presence. It didn't last long. A sound, an alarm, something caught his attention, and then they were there. This time the needles were nastier and the pain was more intense. If he could speak... He didn't remember how to tell them to stop. He wanted this finished, but he had no way of making the sounds to tell them. A guttural scream began inside him, his Fire pushing from deeper than any could see, and he heard a keening sound that was coming from him. They shouted at him. Screamed at him. For a second his amber knew other things. The place he was in, the door, the people in white who hovered outside the ice walls, and the one stood impatient and, at the same time, scared with a ball of Fire in his hands. Fire. Weak broken dying Fire. The one who stood and did this to him had a Fire that had once been amber and was now nothing but dust and the brown of death.
'You can't have it!' Words popped into his mind. The thought of them and the way the parts of them followed a pattern was strange. Frightening. Unreal. Silver and sharp were pushed into his face, and the scream he had inside him could do nothing but erupt in a confusion of roar and tears.
"Hush!" The words were a shout, a curse, and then followed with more loud commands. He concentrated on the hand he could see in front of his eyes. Whatever had held his hands still had snapped on the left and he could see his fingers. Pale skin traced with blue veins, and scarlet blood dripping from a needle scar.
"Ceithin!" He spoke the name, heard the familiar syllables cross his tongue, and even registered the strangled roar of protest that filled the room.
"He's not coming for you, Cariad." The name... Cariad... none of it made sense. "Someone get him still so I can--"
"He's flatlining."
"Adrenaline--"
"Tie him down."
And a single sob rose in him as he heard all of this and fought against the oblivion of white. Please don't. Please. Ceithin...
