Can Sir John Swale keep his family together in the face of war, exile and the cruelty of nature...and does he have the will to do so?

Spring 1331: Swale and his wife Elizabeth are living as exiles in the English-held province of Gascony, but war with France is gathering on the horizon and their marriage is unhappy. Their only child, a daughter, appears to be hopelessly disabled, a cruel trick of God and nature that Swale has no way of fighting.

Another door opened into a large chamber that was an exact replica of the nave of a church, with wooden pews, an altar mounted by a silver crucifix, and a high ceiling painted with an image of Christ in splendour, surrounded by the Apostles.
There was nothing bawdy or erotic about the décor here, and the only sign that all was not as it seemed was the lack of windows. The seamier side of life may have been indulged in Bordeaux, but still the civic authorities appreciated an element of discretion.

“You may kneel before the crucifix if you wish,” said Father Nicholas, “and beg absolution for the sins you are about to commit. That is how it works here. We are not like other churches.”
