"Why don't you enjoy these next few days and have your own good time?"
I tried to think back to the last time I had some fun of the grown-up variety and came up blank. I looked down at my plate, where my piece of the mocha fudge brownie sat untouched. Then I looked around at the other people in the bookstore. I wasn't even sure I knew how to go about having fun anymore.
"Men are like dessert," she said, sensing my dilemma. "They come in multiple flavors, textures, and sizes." She was using a finger to pick at her remnants of our sinful treat, the bulk of which had long since disappeared. Then she discreetly motioned to a younger man by the periodicals. "That would be your all-American apple pie. Fresh faced and ripe for the picking."
I decided to immerse myself in the metaphor. "For years now, I've been eating crumb cake. I think it's time to try something new."
"That's my girl."
I scanned the room. If I could have any man here, who would it be?
The one pouring coffee caught my interest. He was just a tad taller than me, maybe five-foot-nine. The olive skin made Hispanic heritage a distinct possibility. His dark hair was short with just a hint of silver around the temples.
Underneath the apron, I could see the outline of his well-developed chest and shoulders. A crisp white short-sleeved shirt hinted at biceps that bulged every time he tilted the pot.
My heart skipped a few beats. Screw desert, he looked even better.
He came closer, carrying a pot of fresh brew. "Can I heat you up?" His brown eyes served as an invitation to much, much, more.
