Tossing my suitcase on the sofa, I walked out the back door and headed for the slumping dock. Though I wasn’t totally convinced it could hold up under my weight, I edged out onto it and glumly surveyed the black, weed-filled water.
All of a sudden, my weekend getaway seemed a lot more promising. Standing on the dock jutting parallel to mine was the most gorgeous young guy I’d seen in a long time. He looked about 19 or 20, with scruffy dark hair and a wide mouth that was the stuff fantasies were made of. His patched jeans and blue plaid shirt, hanging open over a tight black T-shirt, suggested that he was a lot more at home in this rustic setting than I was. Only after I’d pulled my tongue back in my mouth and forced my gaze away from his narrow hips did I notice that he was carrying a fishing pole and tackle box.
For a moment, he looked as startled as I was, though probably for different reasons. “Where’s Ray?” he asked, glancing back at the shore, obviously assuming I was a buddy my co-worker had brought up for the weekend.
“He let me borrow his place,” I explained with a shrug. “I’ve got to admit, though, it’s not at all like he described it.”
The kid’s smile was noticeably sardonic. “A little rough around the edges, huh? Yeah, I noticed that, too.”
“Oh? You’ve been inside Ray’s cabin?” My brows lifted. Was it possible that this saucy little twink was part of my vacation package? The kid’s quick blush and evasive expression raised my hopes even further.
“I’m Denny. My grandparents own the cabin on the other side of those trees,” he muttered, pointing. “They close it up in the fall, but I come down here sometimes, you know, to take care of stuff. Sometimes I did odd jobs for Ray, too.”
“I’m Stewart. And I don’t suppose any of those jobs included cleaning out the fireplace so he could use it?”
“The fireplace? Uh…sure, I did that lots of times.”
“Well, it’s kind of cold and musty in there, and the most I know how to do it turn up a thermostat. I don’t suppose you’d be willing to come in and…um…give me a hand?”
As soon as the words were out, I winced. That kind of double entendre was pushing it, even for me. Luckily, the kid didn’t seem to notice. Innocently he put the fishing pole and the tackle box down on the dock and started back toward Ray’s cabin. I followed him in and watched, impressed, while he opened the flue and arranged the kindling in an intricate pattern I never would have thought of. When he set back, the brisk orange flames were licking the grate. Watching them made me think of something else I’d like to lick…or have licked.
