The rattle of a carriage reached Johanna, and the sound of horses.
She looked to the open doorway. Six riders, all dressed as vaqueros, well-armed and appearing no less dangerous than the Juaristas, filled the narrow street as the vehicle rounded the corner into view. They halted in front of her.
Making a quick scan of their faces, her gaze centered and tangled with that of one dark-eyed, questioning, strong-featured male. His wide mouth pursed slightly, then relaxed. He leaned forward, resting a forearm on his saddle horn as he looked her over. He said nothing, simply stared for a long, assessing moment, until her breath caught in her throat.
Isabel’s brother, Rudolfo Valasquez. She’d nearly forgotten.
Suddenly self-conscious of her sunburned skin and untidy braid, she brushed at her temple. “Blaine,” she turned to call over her shoulder, while pressing a palm against her fluttery middle.
She’d forgotten Isabel’s brother had once caused her such breathlessness. She’d been very young and completely unstrung over it. Her response was to avoid him, giving all her attention to Johnny during the remainder of Isabel’s visit. Johnny was safe.
