“You’re not going to get warm unless you get out of those wet things,” he said gently, thinking he must be scaring the hell out of her with his suggestion. He placed a hand on each of her shoulders and looked her straight in the eye. He was determined to set her mind to rest. “I promise you, you’ll be quite safe. I know it’s asking a lot, but we do need to do this. Those wet clothes are only keeping your temperature down. You’re already hypothermic, so be a good girl and do as you’re told. Okay?”

The woman looked tired and exhausted, but there was no hiding the flicker of irritation that flashed across her face. She looked him straight in the eye. “There’s no need to be so condescending. Please don’t call me a good girl,” she mumbled. “I can’t get the buttons undone.” She demonstrated a pathetic attempt to do so. “My fingers are frozen. I can’t even feel them.”

Jack was immediately sorry and reached forward to help her. Adrenaline still pumped ferociously through his veins, and his mouth had run away with itself, swapping his earlier anger that he couldn’t resolve the problem quickly enough, with patronizing comments. He needed to get a grip on things, and fast. He knew if he didn’t get her dried off and warm soon, she’d end up freezing to death. He caught sight of the lapel badge that she still wore from earlier in the day. Firelight danced across it. He read the words out loud.

“Bobbie. IT Consultant. Is that your name and what you do?”

She nodded.

“Well, Bobbie. I’m Jack. I know we’re not meeting under ideal circumstances, but we’ll be okay. And, I’m sure, you’ll be laughing about this in few days time down at your local wine bar or wherever it is you chill out.” He gave a short, ironic laugh, hoping he hadn’t ruffled her feathers yet again. She didn’t look amused. “Sorry, no pun intended.”

Ignoring her silence, he worked like a demon. Quickly, he undid the buttons and slipped both her jacket and blouse simultaneously from her shoulders. Then, reaching round to unclasp her bra, he peeled it from her wet, clammy breasts, freeing them into the cold air.

As she gasped, Jack tried not to stare. However, he couldn’t help noticing how perfect they looked. “Bobbie,” he said softly to reassure her. “You don’t need to worry. I’m just helping. Nothing will happen to you. I promise. You do believe me, don’t you?”

She gave a wan, little smile and nodded, but Jack, already busy again beneath the blanket, now slipped his hands around her waist. He marvelled at her slimness. There wasn’t an ounce of flesh to spare. Yet, she felt soft in all the right places. He had to fight the urge to run his hands all over her. She was full of goose bumps as it was.
