Nicky saltó, dejando caer la caja de libros que sostenía en sus manos. Golpeó el suelo, y los libros se salieron. La mano de Nicky fue a su cuello mientras miraba en los ojos de color marrón chocolate más profundos y oscuros que había visto.
--Lo siento, --dijo el hombre--. No quería asustarte.
--No, está bien, sólo me sobresaltaste. --Nicky intentó darle al hombre una sonrisa pero su corazón se aceleró a un millón de millas por minuto. No estaba seguro de si era por su repentina aparición o simplemente por el hecho de que el hombre era extremadamente guapo.
Nicky se agachó y empezó a meter los libros de nuevo en la caja. Miró cuando el hombre hizo lo mismo. Tenía una generosa boca y una nariz aguileña. Su guapo rostro encendido con un poco de belleza apasionada. Era simplemente magnífico.
--¿Llamando al Dr. Amor? --el hombre meditó cuando miró el libro que sostenía en su mano. Alcanzó algunos libros más--. El Preferido del Profe, Violencia innecesaria, El Mejor Amigo del Hombre, --dijo mientras leía el título de cada libro--. Parece que tienes muchos libros de G. A. Hauser. ¿Es bueno?
Nicky palideció, cogiendo los libros rápidamente de la mano del hombre y metiéndolos en la caja. --Sí --susurró--. Ella es muy buena.
--¿Ella? --El hombre se rió--. ¿Una mujer escribe estos libros?
Nicky rió por lo bajo ante la sorpresa en el rostro del hombre hasta que notó que miraba las portadas, portadas muy calientes con hombres sexys expuestos en ellas. Nicky sintió su cara sonrojarse. Agarró el resto de los libros y los apiló en la caja.

Nicky tenía varias ideas, pero ninguna de ellas vería la luz del día. Su situación actual no le permitía involucrarse con nadie, sin importar cuánto le gustaría. Además, Nicky dudaba que el hombre estuviera verdaderamente interesado en él.
--Me llamo Seth --dijo el hombre--, Seth Leighton.
--Nicky.
--Te gustará estar aquí, Nicky --dijo Seth--. Este es un buen barrio, tranquilo. La gente aquí es bastante amistosa.
--El hombre se rió--. Bueno, excepto quizá por la Sra. Ferguson. Ella vive en el 2B. Deberías mantenerte alejada de ella. En ocasiones es bastante irritante.
Nicky asintió como si hubiera entendido algo de lo que el hombre dijo. No era que no quisiera involucrarse con nadie, menos con la Sra. Ferguson del 2B. Nicky no tenía planes para conocer a ninguno de sus vecinos, ni siquiera al sexy que estaba delante de él. Sólo no era seguro.
--¿No dices no muchas veces? --preguntó Seth. Sacudió un poco la cabeza--. Nunca había conocido a una mujer que no pare de hablar.
Nicky se sonrojó cuando miró los desteñidos shorts vaqueros y la simple camiseta de algodón con cuello en V que llevaba. El esmalte de uñas rosa en sus pies brillaba en sus chanclas. Hacían juego con las largas uñas acrílicas de sus dedos.
Nicky sabía aplicar cuidadosamente el maquillaje en su rostro y el rubio pelo rojizo que caía en olas de rizos en su espalda sólo se añadía a su disfraz. Se veía como una mujer. ¿Y no era eso una mierda?
