“It’s changed a lot, hasn’t it?”
Turning her back on the distant stranger in the chair lift, Melaine focused on the smiling, weathered resort employee. “It’s incredible. I can’t believe the condomini¬ums and lodges in the village. The shopping facilities. There are even fast-food restaurants.”
“I know. Ain’t it a mess.” Bert laughed and moved closer to the window, taking Melaine’s eyes, and thoughts, back to the mountain. “Actually,” he went on, “if we have to have progress, I guess it doesn’t look that bad. A few developers have kinds forgotten we’re surrounded by wilderness, not L.A., but most of the places aren’t hard on the eyes.”
Melaine wanted to shake her head, press her hand against her eyes, anything that might make it easier to absorb the fact that this sheltered and isolated community high above the desert of central California had become Tanner’s home. But she couldn’t hide, and she couldn’t escape reality. Unless she turned her back on this opportu¬nity to rebuild her life, she’d have to face him. Weather his hate.
But not yet. Melaine ran her hand over a pine shelf, feeling strength. “I’ve been making lists of the supplies I’ll need,” she told Bert. “Lists and revised lists. There isn’t going to be any trouble getting what I need, is there?”
“I wouldn’t think so. You’ve got time to get this place stocked and under operation before the skiing season opens. And if you run low on supplies during the winter . . . There might be a few storms when we can’t get anything out, but most of the time, nothing stops me and the rest of the pilots.”
They’d left the front door open. The tender and yet penetrating scent of evergreens swirled around Melaine. A name had taken her apart a minute ago. Now the breeze helped her put the pieces back together. “Those storms? Has that ever caused a problem with reaching an injured skier?”
Bert shook his head. “Not likely. The ski patrol isn’t going to let anyone up the mountain if the weather’s really bad. Big storm blows in and the lifts and trams stop operating. The patrol’s always checking snow buildup, and, if necessary, they blast so there won’t be an avalanche.”
“Your ski patrol . . .” Melaine couldn’t bring herself to mention the man carrying the ultimate responsibility. “It sounds as if they’re prepared for everything.”
“As prepared as anyone can be. Talk to Tanner. He’ll tell you a lot more than I can.”
Tanner.
For the next hour, Melaine followed Bert while he showed her around the clinic. She would have two exami¬nation rooms, storage space, and a small office which included the sophisticated communication system neces¬sary to ensure the safety of skiers on both Mammoth and June Mountains.
“There isn’t a thing I would change,” Melaine told Bert as they were leaving. “Patients can easily be brought in here, and with the equipment I’ll have, I’ll be able to handle the majority of accidents and stabilize those I can’t until we can get them to the hospital. You say there are five new patrol members . . . Tanner is going to be training?”
“He’s already got that going.” Bert started toward his Bronco. “Are you going to get in touch with him today? There’s a lot the two of you have to work on.”
No. Not today. Not until she could say his name without remembering their single, incredible night together.
