"Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please."
Slowly the hubbub in the room subsided. Carol saw Lizzie slip her hand into Phil's and give him a reassuring squeeze. Phil looked anxious, so the polls had been closer than Joe had predicted. She was rather touched by Lizzie's show of support for her husband; it showed they were human after all. She looked over at her own husband who was leaning on the back of the couch, his eyes partly glazed, swaying slightly. Quite obviously he was drunk, not yet falling down drunk but well oiled at the least. Glancing across she saw Rebecca frowning at her own husband who appeared to be in a similar state.
Finally the noise from the hall dropped away to a silence which seemed absolute.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have the final results count for the position of mayor of our fair city. The result appeared to be close for many wards but in the end the result is a clear and positive one."
There was a surge of clapping form the canvassers who surrounded the stage in front of the camera's which drowned out his next couple of sentences. Finally his voice penetrated the noise.
". . . and so I take great pleasure in announcing that the city has re-elected Joe Brown as our mayor for the next four years."
The whole hall erupted in applause and Carol watched as his beaten opponent stepped toward the re-elected mayor and, for the cameras, enthusiastically pumped his hand in a warm handshake.
"Whooooooheee! . . ."
Lizzie's yell split the silence in the room as she threw her arms round her husband, the new deputy mayor to congratulate him.
Carol looked at Rebecca who stared back at her.
Now that the nearly inevitable had happened then the next event became inevitable too. The re-election had a very specific impact on the lives of the people in the room. One week from Friday, Phil would be taking the other two men away on a weekend fishing trip. As soon as he was gone the four women would be hosting Joe's regular "Campaign Retreat weekend" right here. Lizzie and Susie were looking forward to it, Carol and Rebecca were not so sure. They would be there but . . .
Phil looked past his wife straight at Carol and tipped her a broad wink. He thought he knew exactly what she was thinking and he was right.
