Rules of Desire can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend you read the series in order -- no hardship as all of the Desire, Oklahoma books are a pleasure to read. In fact, Rules of Desire has taken its rightful place on my keeper shelf where all of the Desire, Oklahoma books have a home and are re-read.
