"Angela, darling!" Her publisher, Darlene Fennel, greeted her with a kiss on each of her cheeks. "I want to introduce you to some very important people." Her refined accent smoothed over each name with ease, and she gestured toward the small crowd surrounding her. Angela put on her best smile and nodded as each person said their 'hellos' and 'evenings'. Then she saw him, and immediately her body froze. "And this is Paul Sumner, our in-house publicist," Darlene said with a grin and a wave of her hand. The distinguished Brit was a few inches taller than her now that she saw him up close. His handsome, angular face accentuated his strong bone structure. Boy, did he have a clean-cut, sexy jaw line. She breathed in the spicy scent of his aftershave mixed with his natural male scent. He wasn't a skinny man, nor too large, but she could tell the way his suit formed over his broad shoulders and strong body that he spent quite a bit of time at the gym. Angela had to focus so she wouldn't be lifted away on the dreamy scent. Something about him proved irresistible, but she couldn't quite put a finger on it. "You know, come to think of it. I believe that's how he met his wife once she sold her first book. How is Sadie doing these days?" His back straightened as he nervously shifted from side to side. Hmm, I guess he didn't like the mention of the wife. Which doesn't change the fact that he is still married to her. He cleared his throat, obviously trying to regain his composure with a smile on his face. "She's doing well, I suspect," he said, his voice a little annoyed. Angela couldn't deny her heart dropping at the sound of the 'w' word. She took note of the frown that crept upon his face once the word was spoken. Ugh! Of course! He couldn't be looking that good and be single. She took a deep breath, placed the best smile she could plaster on her face, and focused on Darlene's words. "He is responsible for selling the most hard to sell books." Angela forced her eyes to look at Paul once again. "Well, I see how much faith you have in my book, Darlene." The tall redhead laughed politely and waved her hand toward Angela. "Is this your first time in London, Angela?" Paul asked, turning his head slightly to the side. Why did he have to say her name like that? Something about the way the sound came from him struck her, as if she was hearing it for the first time, his voice smooth, like hot liquid that oozed into her ears. She tried to calm her heart from beating so fast and forced herself to maintain her composure. Get it together, girl. This is a married man. "Yes, actually it is," she heard herself say. "Has Darlene given you the proper tour of our beautiful city?" Angela's mind raced before she spoke. "Oh, I don't know if I'd have time for all of that with my work and all." "Surely you can spare a little time. The sunrise and sunsets are especially breathtaking around this time of year. You have to catch it like Halley's Comet, though, as they don't show their faces too often with our weather. Shades of primrose, I recall. Soft against the fiery horizon. I know a caf that has a wonderful view." "I thank you, but I may have to take a rain check on that." Paul nodded once. "It'll be my pleasure to show you around." Air, that's what she needed right about now. And more champagne. Definitely more champagne. "Will you all excuse me? It was a pleasure meeting you." Angela made sure she looked at each of the surrounding members of the group before she turned to Paul. His scent intoxicated her, and if she stood there a moment longer, she would be in his arms in a second.
