ExcerptSteven lived in a cramped apartment complex wedged between two adjacent buildings. It looked like an architectural catastrophe, a malformed omen. He ignored the chaos as much as he could, but naturally his anxiety peaked every time the wind blew beyond what he deemed normal. He was never very good at judging normalcy though. He didn’t even consider himself all that normal, but the girls sure got off on it so he didn’t think too much of it. He learned over the years that if a girl buys it you should sell the shit out of whatever it is you have to offer. It’s guaranteed to have everybody win.Tonight was Talia’s night to come over. The walkway was drenched by shadows engrained in the ageing walls. They were lacy and wiry. The leafy dark blemishes led her up the tight-wind of the staircase. Her mysterious form folded into the enigmatic haze as she scooted up two flights. The night was ethereal and the rain rocked down from the sky in heavy clips. She didn’t bother ringing the doorbell, just a light knock to let Steven know she was ready for him. Even though he knew she was coming over he had his usual surprised smirk running around his face. He ran to the door, reached for the knob, and opened it. Steven ran his fingers along the line of hair across her forehead and watched her face as he matted down the wet top. “Look who it is.” “It’s such an ugly night out.” “Well it is New York in December, isn’t it?” She held a blank stare, clearly wasn’t impressed by his sarcasm. “Don’t get smart with me, Steven.” “Yeah I’m sure you just can’t stand me.” “I can’t.” Talia shifted as Steven chipped away at her lies. “Let’s just say I call your bluff.” He didn’t know how to broach the topic so he just laid it all out there. “What do you think about inviting Jenny over?” “You know how I feel about her, Steven.” “I thought you wanted to have some fun tonight.” He tried to abuse the fact that Talia was bisexual. Steven knew she’d melt at the sight of Jenny’s smoking body. “I do. I do. I just don’t know how comfortable I am with her.” “She’s got a damn good body and you know it.” “Yeah, I know, but that’s not the point.” She let the words slip out of her mouth in awkward bursts. “What’s the point then?” “Let your twenty three year-old body have a good run why don’t you?” She paused to consider the point. “I’ll think about it.” We took the conversation into the living room, which consisted of a bloated couch with two dumpy pillows and a tiny television screen that looked more like a prop than an entertainment device. Its stiff bunny ears leaned in two opposite directions. It reminded Steven of the typical conversations with Talia, made him think about how they were at two different places in their lives. She was the studious one and he the party animal. The two were lucky the sex was so good or it’d be a stretch to say they’d ever be good together. “Want to watch something?” Talia grinned. “You can go to hell.” “Sorry, but that’s still not far enough away from you.” “You’re such a bitch sometimes.” “You know I’m kidding around.” “So you say.” Steven lifted his hand and slid it along the horizontal line of the couch. He followed the cloth until his arm felt the warm comfort of her body. He squeezed the breath out of her and watched her expression change from skepticism to one of trust. They were going on the fifth year of knowing one another. Steven was voted best to take home to Mom and she was voted most likely to succeed. She went to Columbia and he went to a shit state school, but he pretended they weren’t that different. For Steven, school was just a means of socializing. It wasn’t a mechanism for obtaining knowledge. He didn’t care about educating himself. He had enough street smarts and common sense to keep him satisfied. “So, can I make that call?” The expression of trust wiped away. Her face was enveloped by a layer of disbelief. It spoke to Steven and said how could he be so bold? “Alright, give her a call.” |
