Pelinas now knows the extent of his father's twisted machinations, Per Marat's willingness to use even his own sons as tools to fulfill what he believes is his destiny. Wracked by guilt, turning a deaf ear to all those who love him, Pelinas chooses to live only until he can accomplish one thing, to kill his father. Of course, he has no notion of how, since a formidable army surrounds his father and even the dead obey him. But a rift among Pelinas' brothers, the sudden appearance of a small troop of Koss assassins who claim some mysterious loyalty to him, and the discovery of an old journal may hold the keys. Can he only puzzle it all together in time to stop the terrible destruction he knows will come if his father wins his war? 0 Ratings

ExcerptAt first, he shook his head and tried to pull his hands away. Then suddenly, he sat still and looked directly at her. “Roya?” he whispered. “Do you truly love us? All three of us? Even me?” The way he asked nearly broke her heart, as if he believed she couldn’t possibly love him. She gripped his hands and answered, “Yes, Peli, I do love you, truly.” She leaned forward to kiss his forehead and then rose to take Tevril’s hands to say, “And I love you.” She kissed his cheek and went on to Devrin, taking the dry, cool hand he offered. “And I love you, too, Dev,” she concluded. He closed his eyes and sighed softly as she kissed his fingers, and she backed him up and shoved him down on the bench next to Pelinas. He suddenly looked wobbly. It was the first time she’d said it to him. To Tevril, she had whispered it in the dark more than once; to Pelinas, she had said it in a desperate moment and, maybe he hadn’t believed her, but to Devrin, she had never said it. He seemed overwhelmed. “So what now?” She looked at each one in turn. “We’re clear on everything, and you know about each other. Where does that leave us?” |
