Neve Warren sneaked a peek over her shoulder again as she ran. Night cloaked distant figures behind her, and she wished she could see. Her breath came out in white puffs, and she sucked in more air.
Someone is following me.
She hadn't been able to shake the thought for several minutes, and a man in nondescript clothing shadowed her when she looked back. The feeling had gripped her as soon as she came out of the surf board store, the sensation of eyes on the back of her head, tracking her every move.
The boardwalk had light traffic the week before Christmas-- just a few teens, kids, and families after dark. Waves crashed against the beach just a short distance out, and a huge sandcastle caught her eye as she picked up speed. Neve enjoyed the escape, the anonymity of it all. That's why she had come to Ocean City, Maryland, just a couple days before.
Teenaged boys darted past her, laughing and jostling her, and she caught sight of the hooded man. He was closer now, unless it was all in her mind.
Her breath coming in gasps, Neve ran full out, jostling into an angry crowd. Her leg sizzled with pain.
“Sorry!” She yelled and kept running until she smacked head on into a man in blue with a black jacket on. His shiny badge caught her eye.
“Woah. What’s wrong? No running allowed on the boardwalk, Miss.”
Her hands pressed against his chest, Neve looked into a pair of sapphire blue eyes. A blond-red beard and wavy reddish blond hair completed the picture of a tanned god in uniform.
She moved away from the handsome stranger.
“I'm sorry. I think someone's following me, and I panicked.”
His eyes narrowed. “Just stand here a second, and we'll see.” He scanned the crowd, and Neve caught her breath, feeling safe next to him.
