He turned back to me, winding his arms around my waist and pulling me tight up against him. My brain screamed out that I should leave. Run away and pretend this whole night never happened, but his arms felt so good. So right. It was as if my whole life had been leading me here to this moment on the beach with Jack. My voice caught in my throat, my heart fluttering as he pulled me into his arms. “The Selkie would always long for the sea. Never really being able to forget the urgent longing, no matter how much they need their human lover.” My voice quivered. He was so close, the warmth of his body enveloping my frame. His fingertips threaded through the thick strands of my hair as he brushed it away from my face. I almost couldn’t speak. “They’re trapped here. Without their skins, they can never return to the sea that they love.”
His fingertips brushed the edge of my cheek and for a moment I feared that I would faint into his arms. His arms held me tightly and I could feel the lean musculature pressing against my body. “How terrible for them,” he whispered, pressing his lips to the crest of my cheek. His scent hung heavy in the air around us. That, coupled with the feel of his skin, made me feel drunk, though I’d only had one glass of wine. “To never be able to return to your home. Such a sad story.”
I nodded slowly, “As the story goes, the Selkie would grieve himself—or herself—to death.”
“Such a selfish act, but disguised as love.” As he spoke, his lips moved softly over my skin. “Humans really are such cruel creatures, yet we are drawn to them like moths to a flame.”
Surely the seductive quality of his voice had lulled me into a dreamlike state. Surely I hadn’t heard him correctly. “You speak of humans as if you aren’t one yourself.” I laughed nervously, searching his face for signs of humor. But his eyes were as cold as could be. They pierced right through me as if seeing into the darkness of my heart; into my deepest fantasies and desires. “But perhaps you’re something more,” I whispered just before he kissed me.
Our lips met with a desperate, crushing force that stole my breath. His lips were soft and generous, pulling mine between them. His teeth scraped along my lower lip, teasing me to open to him, and when I did, his tongue slid slowly inside, delving into the deep cavern of my mouth. I could taste the salty air on his lips and it made me want him more. I kissed back eagerly, breathing into him as if trying to save his life. His arms tightened around my waist and I found myself crushed against him. I whimpered softly into his mouth, unaware that I was writhing against him. “Nothing more than everything you’ve ever wanted,” he purred, capturing my mouth again. I could feel his hands rubbing gently up and down my spine, then lower to rest on the curve of my ass.
