“Is it cold?” She drew the ends of his coat around her.
“Hell, yes! Don’t let that stop you.” Jed waited in the middle of the river. She hesitated, then dropped his coat to the ground. She waded in, the water instantly soaking through her hem to the rest of her garment.
Shivering, Cassie picked her way over the rocks until she slipped and fell with a startled cry. She came up for air, sputtering and teeth chattering, but he only laughed. A moment later, she laughed, too. She splashed him, and he splashed her back. The water reflected the moonlight, and each droplet sparkled like shattered diamonds before falling back into the river.
They stared at each other for a moment, and he opened his mouth to say something, but instead splashed her again. She retaliated in kind. He moved quickly and grabbed her arms. Her laughter died in her throat as he pulled her toward him. The moonlight reflected in the dark depths of his eyes. She rested her hands on the flat planes of his bare chest, fingers splayed to feel as much of him as possible.
His grip on her eased. His hands ran up and down her chilled arms until the heat from his palms warmed her. His eyes closed, and he dipped his head. Her heart thudding, she rose on tiptoe on the rocky bottom, her feet slipping. Instead of a kiss, he rested his forehead against hers, exhaling hot breath on her skin.
