Pretending not to hear her comment, he took several deep breaths. This just couldn't be happening. He marched across the lawn, not as fast as he used to move, but quicker than he'd walked at any time lately. He took in the neat little white stucco house, the manicured lawn, the big live oak trees with Spanish moss dangling from their branches, and the yellow rose bushes near the front door. Pretty. She'd always liked flowers, especially roses. He stepped up on the concrete stoop and pushed the bell. His hands began to sweat and his heart shifted into overdrive. In a few seconds she'd be standing there and he'd see the reality, not the vague girlish picture he remembered.
And then the door opened. They stared at each other. The years hadn't changed her that much, he thought. Oh, God, she was lovely. His irritation evaporated.
"You're even more beautiful than I remembered." The remark slipped past his lips before he could stop it. But it was true. As with his sister, ten years had added to rather than subtracted from her loveliness, years he hadn't been there to watch.
She blushed, sending a becoming peachy glow washing over her smooth cheeks. "Hello, Brett," she said quietly.
Gone was her long hair, replaced by short golden curls which framed her oval face. Sapphire blue eyes radiated maturity. Her nose tip-tilted and her mouth--oh, damn--just looking at that full lower lip again sent hot sensations arrowing downward. She wore a short-sleeved blue dress that matched her eyes. Of course she'd wear blue, her favorite color.
