Excerpt
The sounds of the dogs barking roused Melechk from a sound slumber. He stepped from the huge bed, feet landing firmly on the carpeted floor. He bounded toward the window, sweeping the curtains aside to see what the ruckus was about.
Something white flew past the window at an alarming speed. The voices and shouts of his guards rang through the night, accompanied by fiery arrows.
“What the hell?” Melechk hurried away from the window, donned a pair of pants and his boots and transported himself outside into the heat of action.
“What’s happening?” he asked his manservant, David, as he joined him on the yard.
“An intruder Sire. It somehow crossed the force field barrier and nearly made it to the mansion. The dogs spotted it first, alerting the guards.”
“I erected the force field myself. Whatever it is has to be packing some serious power.”
“Yes Sire and it’s incredibly fast.”
Melechk looked out of the window again. “Maybe I should join them.” He disappeared leaving David to stand guard over the front door.
The guards were deep into the woods by the time he caught up with them and it was beginning to drizzle making the ground slippery. The dogs barked and yapped at the trunk of the tree. They had cornered something and were trying their best to get it.
Melechk looked up, darkness making it near impossible to see.
One of the guards pointed. “It’s up there, Sire, near the top of the tree.”
Melechk used his exceptional vision to peer up. Leaves and branches parted. “Come down,” he ordered loudly. His voice sounded through the night.
“No,” a soft voice answered back.
Melechk shook the base of the tree so hard that the trespasser fell from his perch and plummeted toward the ground.
“Watch out, here it comes.”
The guards took their positions, preparing for the attack. It came down on them in a blazing light, hurling sharp tree branches and whatever else in its reach.
Melechk kept his eyes trained on the culprit. The white clothing it wore made it an easy target. He reached up and grabbed it just as the hooded figure made it to the bough of the tree. It wiggled in his grasp. The struggling intensified. Bored with the situation, Melechk snatched the hood and a cascade of blonde hair filled his hands. It was a human female. He spun her around. No, not human but very beautiful and injured. The aroma of blood invaded his nostrils and called out to his beast.
She sprang from his massive arms and ran toward the mansion with the dogs chasing her.
“She’s mine,” he told the guards. “Get the dogs.”
