Excerpt"I'm here. What do you have to say to me?" Her hands were folded on the table in front of her and she sat straight, her posture unbendable, her chin high. The smug woman who sat across from him intended to be confrontational. He decided to take a different approach. "First, hello, Avery," he started and when she didn't smile at him he started to lose his patience. "All right, what lie have I told you?" Pushing back in his seat he watched as her eyes shut momentarily, opening to stare back at him with a loathing he'd never seen from her before. "Do you get many women with your line?" "What line, Avery?" She rolled her eyes at him, shaking her head, her voice deepening to a mock male tone. "'I live only for the moment. I believe in love and marriage, but not for me.'" She paused and drank from her glass, adding, "'I'm sterile, so I won't foist myself on an unsuspecting woman who might change her mind and decide she wants a family. Nobody gets hurt when it ends, no false positives!'" "No lie, Avery, I was being honest with you that night at Jack's." His mind instantly conjured up a memory of her in a red dress. His first glimpse of her had had him heated and erect. "And how does your wife feel about your honesty?" This time she held his gaze and didn't blink. He knew she watched several emotions wash across his face, waiting to see how he'd respond. |
