Although the sun was bright and people continually milled around him, Rad felt cold and alone. For an October day, it was as good as it could get. A clear, azure sky with almost no clouds meant it was cold but dry. He'd decided to take a walk in the small town in which he lived. As it was a tourist destination, it was geared appropriately: cafes, bars, gift shops and antique shops all added to the natural beauty of the harbour town.
Rad had been feeling melancholy for a few days. His last relationship had faltered almost as soon as it had started. The initial flirting had been fun as had a couple of very casual dates. However, on their first romantic date, just about everything had gone wrong. Before he'd even left home he'd spilt a drink on his shirt for the evening and had to find another.
When he tried to call for a cab, his landline was faulty and his cell phone out of battery. By the time he was in the cab, he was already thirty minutes late with no way to contact his date. He finally arrived nearly three quarters of an hour late and was greeted by an angry blond who was no longer in a romantic frame of mind. They'd eaten dinner, a polite frost glistening coolly between them, and gone home separately.
Rad hadn't been surprised when his next offer of a date was blown off. Despite not being that upset over the 'Titanic-date-disaster', Rad was feeling decidedly despondent. He was heading into his mid-thirties and had several short-term and a couple of longer-term relationships behind him, but none that he could have honestly said he wished were still ongoing. It had been right to end them when he did, but, so far, he was yet to meet his special someone.
"Now that's a very sad face, dear boy. You should be smiling on a beautiful day like today."
Turning at the sound of the friendly, female voice, Rad saw a small, elderly lady smiling at him. With her long, dark purple dress and white hair in a neat bun, she looked perfect for her setting: just outside the door of an antique shop. Rad couldn't help but smile at her as her blue eyes sparkled with merriment.
"I can almost hear your thoughts, dear boy," she said, wagging a finger at him. "For that, your penance will be to come into the shop and look at something I think is perfect for you."
"Yes, Ma'am," Rad said deferentially. He followed her inside. It was an upmarket shop, the antiques not simply pre-loved items sold to raise money. While Rad had a decent allowance from his parents' inheritance, supplemented by his freelance writing, he wasn't the type to simply fritter money away. He had no intention of being smooth-talked into something he neither wanted nor needed by a keen salesperson.
He followed her lead into a back office where the smiling lady finally stopped and showed him a mirror, which instantly captivated him.
The mirror itself was full-length and oval-shaped. Its frame was beautiful, polished, dark wood and rectangular. Angels were carved into the top corners and seemed to gaze down fondly at whoever stood looking at themselves. The sides and bottom were a mix of tiny cherubs and intricately carved flowers and creeping vines. As much as he wanted it, Rad was certain it was going to be out of his league.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" the saleslady asked, her smile now fond as she laid a hand on the mirror's frame.
"Yes. Yes, it is," Rad agreed.
"Its last owner's name is carved into the back. He got it from his grandmother who received it as a wedding present from her husband. It was deeply loved and cared for by both of them."
"How much?" Rad asked impetuously. He'd come with a mind to find something to write about. Why not a local interest story of the mirror and its previous owners? Small towns liked their history and could often add to the bare bones of the story and flesh it out nicely.
"Name a price," the saleslady countered.
Rad made a mental calculation of what he could comfortably afford and named his price. His reward was a wide, beaming smile and a delighted clap of hands.
"Perfect. Now let me take your details and you'll be invoiced."
"I can pay by credit card," Rad offered.
"No, dear boy. I can check your driver's licence and make a note of the card number, but we'll invoice you. You have a vehicle you can put this in? Good. You go and fetch it and I'll wait here. Park around the back. There's space and it will be easier to get the mirror in."
Pocketing his licence and credit card, Rad left the shop and fetched his car. He'd come in the truck and so there was plenty of room for his acquisition. He packed it carefully and drove slowly home.
