Captain Ormond was a practical business man in the mid-eighteenth century, with a notorious lineage he struggled to shed. Zerinda was a beautiful woman, physically and emotionally scarred. While sheltered, she had confidence and spirit, the qualities his wife would need to thrive aboard his ship. With one glimpse, he knew she was what was missing from his life. He had to convince her she was his true treasure.

"I merely stopped to do a good deed, seeing smoke coming from your cottage, ma'am. I am an acquaintance of the Prescotts and would not like to see their property destroyed needlessly."

Zerinda laughed. "So you are merely checking on the Prescott's property?"

"Is that so far fetched?"

"It is most likely not your original reason, but it would satisfy the Prescotts. And you're name, sir? I was unable to read the name on your ship as she passed earlier this afternoon."

"My name is Edward Ormond, Captain."

She recognized his name, and knew of his reputation. She'd suspected as much, and remembered her parents being close with Mary Ormond. Then she retrieved the last bit of history that she'd been taught not to verbalize. "And your ship?"

"My ship is the Independence, ma'am. She is well known for her fair trade along this eastern coastline."

Zerinda felt he defended his ship, along with his position. So this was the famous Captain Ormond, whom her sister often spoke about.

"And your name, please?"

With a heavy sigh, she turned halfway towards him, still careful to shield the right side of her face. "I am Zerinda Prescott, youngest daughter of Alexander and Lucy Prescott."

He sat back, eyes wide open. "Zerinda Prescott. I have heard of you, but never seen you at any functions I attended at the home in my youth. Most people believe you are merely a myth. Didn't--"

"I would think my father and my sister both would prefer I was merely fictional. However, they do have to deal with me as I am still a person." With another sigh, she continued. "After the accident, they told anyone who knew me that I passed in the blaze. My parents thought it would shield me. I survived to their dismay."
