Angela closed her eyes, pressing her lids together tightly. She heard claws scraping against concrete as though the animals were jockeying into position. All went silent for a moment, followed by little yips and yaps, and then the male gave a long, low alpha howl.
Angela opened her eyes just in time to see the wolves lie down on a mattress with rumpled blankets, curl around each other, and go to sleep. No! No, don’t go to sleep. Let’s get out of here. Her shouts went unheard—proving again that she was merely a translucent image above them with no say in any of this insanity. Finally, after muttering around in her head for a long time, fatigue won.
Rudely yanked conscious by pained howls, Angela glanced down and gasped. In the golden orange glow of dawn, both wolves were changing into human forms. They held each other as their nude bodies jerked, muscles twitched. While Angela tried not to stare at the tanned, magnificent male who glistened with sweat, an unknown force yanked her back into her human form—and into the man’s powerful arms. Before she could protest, agonizing pain radiated through her. The “shifting” male held her close, pressing his nude body tightly against hers as though to ease their mutual pain. The muscle spasms beneath his skin emulated her own. His body radiated a heat that felt welcoming in the chilly dungeon. She experienced a brief flash of excitement, then fear. Dear God, I’m in the arms of a man I don’t know, a cursed man, a werewolf . . .
His strong etched face loomed over her, his shadowed, square jaw set in determination. Sensual lips revealed terrifying protruding fangs. With her tongue, she touched her own daggerlike incisors and growled low in her throat while she considered biting him.
Before she could decide the wisdom of such a hostile act in her vulnerable position, he bent, and when his lips touched hers, an awe-inspiring thing happened—their fangs disappeared, allowing an exciting, dangerous, wildly insane . . . and insanely wonderful kiss.
No! No, I can’t let this happen, she thought as her arms, of their own accord, pulled him closer. His lips were firm against hers, his mouth open and moist. His tongue sought hers. Against her better judgment, she offered it, opening to him like an addict tasting her first intoxicant. Fire flooded her veins and roared out of control, taking possession of her. His heat surrounded her, seeping into her bones, spreading new waves of flames through her until every inch of flesh was on fire.
“This is madness,” she whispered between crazed kisses. “I don’t even know you.”
Abruptly, he pulled back. His face in the glow of dawn and dying flames shone with an eerie golden light. His amber eyes sparked with wildness—or madness. He shook his head as though to clear it and stared at her, looking dazed, like a man coming out of coma or awakening from a confusing dream. He climbed off her and stood.
She gasped. Her eyes slid up his lithe naked form, from his bare feet to slender hips and long, muscular legs. The man had the whole package, including great abs, an impressive expanse of chest, and broad shoulders. The man has it going on there big-time, she thought. However, it was when her gaze reached his face that the full force of his powerful aura hit her. He was the kind of man who always caught her eye—tall, dark, and dangerous.
At his equally relentless scrutiny of her nudity, she grabbed a blanket, scrambled to her feet, and wrapped the cloth armor securely around her nakedness.
Their gazes locked. “Who are you?” he asked.
Highlighted by the dawning sun, he towered over her, casting a dark, threatening shadow into the shrinking space between them. Angela pegged him as a wealthy corporate-chief type. But he is a werewolf!
