He woke in a cold sweat with his heart beating furiously. It happened every time he had the nightmare. Alone, in the back seat of the luxury sedan on a winding road in Germany, his driver lost control on the black ice. Joe had been trapped in the back seat of the rolling vehicle, being tossed with each revolution. He remembered it coming to a rest with his body in an awkward position. There was pain, an enormous amount of pain throughout his whole body. His mind registered that his hands had no feeling at all. Then he felt the cold radiating throughout him. His mind kept reliving each toss and turn as the car tumbled down the ravine, his motions going with gravity. Finally his mind went blank when the darkness overtook him.
He’d woken days later, bruised and battered. His first thought wasn’t that he’d survived; it was the condition of his hands. He tried to lift them, felt them weighted down and realized the enormity of his situation. Fighting a language barrier with his medical team led to frustration on a different level. In those waking moments, Joe knew his life would never be the same. He carried an enormous weight of anger and resentment at circumstances he couldn’t control. The accident hadn’t been his fault. His life as he knew it was taken away in the uncontrollable blink of an eye.
Now it became his choice and responsibility to rebuild what he could and adapt to the rest of the changes. The irony of the whole situation was he couldn’t decide if he was better off or if his lot in life had just worsened.
