Soft evening breezes blew across the tall grasses, ruffling them prettily. Wildly, the breeze sent her long russet hair whipping across her face and into her eyes and mouth. She held onto her delicate, large-brimmed straw hat as she struggled to pull her hair away from her face. Gazing across the meadow, across her land, land that had been worked with sweat and sometimes blood of every generation of Jameses since the first settlers had traversed the wilderness of the new world, she felt humble.
Bethany loved the solitude and endurance of this place, but she also felt the weight of the responsibility to all the Jameses that had come before her and would come after her. Her holed on this place and this life remained tenuous in the best of times, but with the recent economic trials and the loss of so much livestock to the wolves, she could only pray that her love and commitment to the farm would be enough to keep it.
She knew that the bank waited a breath away to take it from her, but she would not give up until they came and physically removed her from her land, her home. Bethany had little, but she managed and what she did not have in the bank or in the barn, she made up for with hope and lots of passion to endure and succeed. Her young son would be the next James to love the land and she wanted to leave him more than debt and despair.
Her parents had loved the family farm too, but when the wolves tragically taken their lives and the life of her adult brother she vowed to make them proud. They left her many debts, but she was slowly paying those debts back and if she could just keep the animals safe and stop the killings, she would be able to be debt free by the time her son became a teenager. She had become pregnant right before her eighteenth birthday, and between finishing high school late because of the burden of running such a large operation alone and then becoming a mother she had found few worry free days in her life. Now, at twenty-three, she felt confident that she could keep the farm; she could succeed!
Russell, her four-year-old son, came running out of the corncrib, his favorite hiding spot, with a baby mouse in the palm of his hand. “Mommy look at what I found!”
Smiling she inspected his new “pet” and said, “Russ, that is just a little baby. You should put him back before his mommy starts to worry.”
“Okay, Mommy, but when he is bigger, can I keep him?”
