Excerpt

When she clicked off, Melissa felt totally alone. Thus far in life, she’d had very little to distract her from the pleasures that consumed her time and attention. She was not equipped to endure trial. She felt adrift with nothing to cling to. All she could do was to wait.

Three hours later, a nurse invited her into the critical care room where Scott lay hooked to machines. Though drugged and unconscious, she had been told his prognosis was good. If only he would wake and speak to her, she would feel comfort in the assurance.

When visitation time was over, the nurse gently ushered her out of the room, promising Scott’s condition seemed stable. “You need to get some rest, dear. You won’t do your fiancé any favors by exhausting yourself. He’s under heavy medication and will probably sleep a while still.”

Melissa left reluctantly. However, the nurse had been insistence about her departure. So she settled in the waiting room, intending to get an update in an hour or two.

Ann would be here tomorrow and she would take comfort in her company.
