A Perfect Christmas Excerpt:
"Are you going to speak or just ignore me?" Skye asked in a tone that Callum remembered well. One thing about Skye was what you saw was what you got; there was no hidden agenda, and that had been a novelty to him.
"Straight to the point," he said.
"No other way to be." Her voice trembled.
"What are you doing here, Skye?"
"I've rented Ivy Cottage over Christmas."
"You came all the way from London?"
"No, I've been living in Edinburgh for almost a year."
Callum drove slowly. The snow was coming down thick and fast, and freezing as soon as it hit the ground. This ice storm the weather office had predicted was going to get worse before it got better; he could smell it in the air.
"This is bad, isn't it? How far to the cottage?" she asked.
"I know this isn't going to make you happy, but there is no way you're going to get to that cottage tonight," he said as he turned into the drive to his home.
It was a large, seventeen-century mansion which he'd purchased last year, and he'd been modernizing it ever since. The six-bedroom house was a joy to him, his sanctuary. When he'd chosen to spend Christmas here alone, his friends had been in an uproar, but he'd been adamant about wanting some time alone.
"Don't be ridiculous. The cottage can't be that far from here," she muttered as he carefully pulled around the snow-covered, circular hedging.
"It's about another four miles, and there is no way I'm going any further in this weather." He stopped outside his home and left the engine running.
Skye's hands were clasped in front of her, her clothes were wet, her cheeks flushed, and Callum was sure he could see tears lurking in the depths of her eyes.
"What am I going to do?" she asked, turning to him.
"You can stay with me. Perhaps I'll be able to get you there tomorrow. I'll ring the garage about your car, but I can't see them coming out until the snow stops."
"But what about my clothes? I have nothing to wear."
"Don't worry about that. I'm sure we'll find something for you."
"Won't your family mind?" she asked.
"I live here on my own."
Callum turned the engine off. He knew they wouldn't be able to stay outside in the cold any longer. Skye was shivering despite the heater being on full blast.
"Come on inside. We can argue about this in the house where the central heating is on and you can get out of those wet clothes."
He stepped out onto the snow and his booted feet sank at least three inches. Callum rounded the bonnet and before Skye had a chance to get out he was opening the door for her.
Those deep blue eyes that had once tugged at his emotions were large and round as she stared back at him. The look of hurt and mistrust was still there, and he couldn't blame her. He'd let her down big time. It had been the biggest mistake of his life not going with his own instincts. He knew he shouldn't have let himself be intimidated but he had, and he'd regretted that one single decision.
Skye pushed his arm away as she jumped down. She would have fallen had he not reached out and wrapped his arm around her waist. He slammed the door shut before leading her toward the back entrance.
"You're shivering," he muttered. "If you're going to come this far north at this time of year, at least make sure you're properly attired."
Laughing with an edge, she answered him through gritted teeth, "I wasn't planning on my car breaking down and having to take a hike in the snow."
Mistletoe Magic Excerpt:
Holly's deep green eyes were framed by the darkest lashes Noah had ever seen. Her blonde hair was cut short, the long curls were gone, leaving the silken strands curling at the ends. He liked it and wondered what had made her chop it all off. When he had seen her last Christmas it had been long.
He'd fancied her for years, and yet they'd never gotten together. Holly avoided him except when he would watch her looking at him, and then she'd realize, and her face would go a deep red.
He leaned down, capturing her wrist in his hand and gently tugging her onto his lap, just like one of the children. A flush reddened her cheeks as she looked around, but he'd made sure everyone was busy with the boys and girls who were playing with their new toys before he'd pulled her onto his lap.
Holly turned toward him. "I think you'll find I'm not a child, and I'm a little too heavy for your knee."
"Not heavy at all." He pursed his lips as he looked her up and down. "Definitely. Not. A. Child." He pronounced the words singly.
She giggled, but he knew it was a nervous gesture. His mouth quirked beneath the scratchy moustache. Noah placed his hand on her thigh. The slacks she wore were thin, and the heat from her skin warmed his hand. Sexy.
"So, Miss Holly Berry, would you be on the naughty or nice list this Christmas?"
"Nice, of course," she answered, but he could see her chest rise and fall as her breathing quickened.
"And what would you like from Santa this year?" Noah asked, his voice innocent but his intention daring her to say what he knew she was feeling. There had always been that sexy undertone between them, almost…but not quite.
He felt her body tense, and her wide, green eyes stared at him, the tension palpable between them.
"Tell me, Holly…anything you want…anything." His voice decided then and there to almost cut out as the huskiness scratched his throat.
She hesitated for just a moment before leaning down to whisper in his ear. "I would like to be on the naughty list." Her breath was warm on the sensitive spot below his lobe.
"I'm not sure if I can help with that, but I will if I can." He kept his voice low, pleasure curling in his belly.
"I would like to have hot, unforgettable, sweaty, orgasmic sex with someone."
Noah coughed and spluttered, and Holly stood quickly, patting him on the back. Noah yanked her back down onto his knee while he caught his breath. Once he had his breathing under control he leaned in, cupping her ear so that no one else could hear what he was saying.
"Holly, you never cease to amaze me with what comes out of those lips."
She pulled away. "Forget it. I was only teasing."
He drew her back closer to him. "Oh no, you don't get out of it that easily. After careful consideration it seems that you have been very, very good, deserving everything you've asked for. So does that mean you go on my naughty list for next year?" He wiggled his eyebrows.
It was Holly's turn to choke. He patted her back until she'd resumed some sort of calm.
"Ho, ho, ho," he whispered.
A Baby for Christmas Excerpt:
"Belle, go and sit. I'm perfectly able to make myself a sandwich."
No one except her Gran had ever spoken to her in such a caring way, and a tingle ran through her. Ethan's eyes were kind, and his fingers on her arm were gentle yet firm; the kind of strength that made you think nothing could ever go wrong.
"It's the holidays, Ethan. You should be home with your family."
He looked down at her belly then back up to hold her gaze. "I am with my family."
Oh dear Lord, what could she say to that? Her heart raced as light-headedness came over her. His brows drew together, a concerned expression on his face, and before he could say anything she pulled the chair out and sat down. It was either that or fall down.
Damn, this man was going to make it hard for her to turn away. Even from the very second she had laid eyes on him she had known he was different. But Ethan was only there because he felt responsible…how could she live with that?
* * * *
A peculiar desperation clawed at Ethan. He had a feeling Belle was going to fight him, but his mind was set. He was there to be with her, whether she wanted him to stay there with her or if she was willing to come back with him to Pine Tree Valley. He understood she had a life there, so he might have to make some major decisions about his own way of living back home. For he was sure there was no way he was going to let her go.
Ethan handed her the tea she'd prepared before sitting down to his sandwich. He watched her sip the hot drink. Her hands held a slight tremor, so to give her space he took in his surroundings. The kitchen was warm and friendly. Yellow wallpaper with white daisies blended nicely with the pine units. Even though it was freezing outside it felt cozy inside.
He took a bite of the sandwich, closing his eyes as the flavor hit his tongue. "This is good." He'd honestly never tasted anything so delicious in his life. "Did you bake the bread?"
"Yes." He heard the smile in her voice as he took another bite.
"Oh my God, this is amazing."
"I'm glad you're enjoying it. I love to cook. It's a new recipe with some extra ingredients I've added."
He noticed she had several roasts in the refrigerator. "Why do you cook meat, and such a lot of it, if you're a vegetarian? Do you have guests coming in?"
"No, I don't take bookings at this time of year. Christmas is for family." She shrugged. "I used to love spending the time with my Gran, we used to go to the midnight mass on Christmas Eve."
Belle sighed, and Ethan noticed how sad she looked.
"Your Gran has passed away?"
"Yes, that's why I was on holiday when we…"
"Met." He raised his eyebrow at her obvious reluctance at saying the word.
Belle nodded. Her embarrassment over their encounter was plain to see by the flush on her cheeks. But he wasn't embarrassed. She had been the best thing that had ever happened to him. That sounded so lame. Jeez, they'd only been with each other a small amount of time. It was crazy…the whole thing was.
"Yes, well…I'm glad you like the food."
"So tell me why you need to cook all that food for just one person?"
"To take to the women's shelter."
Why was Ethan not surprised? He didn't know her well, but it was the kind of thing he would expect from her.
