It's New Year’s Eve, and Marco is newly single. While brooding over his recent breakup, he uncovers new information and realizes his self-doubts may have cost him the man of his dreams. Determined to distract himself from the misery of sabotaging his own happily ever after, he heads out in search of distraction in the form of a one night stand.
But his evening takes a turn when he crosses paths with Aaron, his charming ex. Aaron is eager for another chance, but Marco remains hesitant. Still, there’s no harm in sneaking off for one last hookup ... right?
Marco took a sip of his drink. Before he could put it down, Aaron’s fingers wrapped around Marco’s on the glass. Deftly, Aaron maneuvered the glass to his own grip. He brought it to his mouth to take a sip from the edge of the glass where Marco’s lips had just touched. Aaron licked his lips as he set the glass down, watching Marco the whole time.
“Let’s start over,” Aaron said. “Maybe you came out tonight to sit and be a grump. But I came out to have a good time.”
“Good luck with that,” said Marco.
“Looks like I’m already in luck,” Aaron replied lightly. “I found you, didn’t I?”
Marco knew he should walk away, ignore Aaron, and get on with his night. But he also knew exactly what Aaron was thinking. Aaron’s voice had dropped an octave, flowing thick and sweet like honey. The gold flecks in his eyes gleamed and his lashes lowered.
Oh, yes, Marco knew what that look meant.
In the eight months that Marco and Aaron had been together, they had racked up an impressive number of clandestine public hookups. They would be out somewhere, their flirting would heat up degree by degree, and then eventually one of them would offer up that look, and the other would grin back, leading to a quickie in an alley or a bathroom or a coat closet or just about any place where they could safely dare each other again and again to risk a bit of pleasure within stolen moments.
And for as stubborn as he was, Marco didn’t want to walk away from the possibility of finding himself in Aaron’s arms once more. Not after a month of hurt followed by this evening’s wallop of self-inflicted shame. The onslaught of guilt and yearning had left Marco raw and aching, and the warmth of Aaron’s offer was an irresistible balm.
Besides, isn’t that what he had come out for? Maybe it wasn’t as anonymous as he’d originally planned, but he could keep it a one-night stand, right?
