Stomach twisting, she hugged herself tight. The pain of knowing her mate was gone forever stole the breath from her lungs, made her heartbeat sluggish and defeated. After all this, after waiting so long for him to show one little sign of love for her, she’d lose him? The horror of an empty life lay ahead. She’d never be able to love another.

“What have you done to him?” She screamed out the words around rising bile in her throat, claws forming where her fingernails had been. Inside, her wolf demanded release. She struggled to restrain it. But if she attacked her father, she would surely die, and if she shifted and tried to escape, her father would only follow and run her down.
