When the silver Nissan Altima moves to the side of the road, Chase stops his police cruiser behind it and runs the plates. The report comes back clean, but his eyebrows pull together in confusion.

“Nicole Greyson,” he mumbles while filling out his log book. “How do I know that name?”

He shakes the thought away and gets out.

“License and registration, please?” he instructs before fully reaching the driver’s side door.

“Can’t you see I’m working on it?” a silky female voice bites back at him.

Ready to issue a terse warning, he is left speechless when he shines his flashlight through the rolled down window. As the woman in the driver’s seat reaches across the car to the glove compartment, dark brown hair cascades down the tanned skin of a nearly bare back. The spectacular view throws him off. He blinks several times to make sure his tired eyes aren’t playing tricks on him. Nope, this is for real. That is in fact a half-naked woman sitting inside. This night just got more interesting!

“Here,” she grumbles as she thrusts her papers into his hand. “What’s your name, officer?”

“Crawford,” he replies sternly. “Officer Crawford.”

“Well, Officer Crawford, I’ve sort of had a shitty night, so in the interest of saving time, I’ll be blunt. I don’t know why you pulled me over. Maybe because the universe enjoys screwing with me. I have no clue how fast I was going, so I’ll take your word on it. And I’m coming from my now ex-boyfriend’s house and heading straight home.” Glancing up, she squints into the beam of the flashlight with a frown. “I figure that about covers it. Now if you could write my ticket, I’ll be happy to mail in a check so you can get back to work and I can be on my merry little way.”

Unable to keep from smiling at the gutsy, young woman, he’s glad she can’t see his face behind the bright light he’s angling down at her. Chase steps back, motions his hand, and commands, “Step out of the vehicle, ma’am.”

“What!” she screeches. “Why? I told you everything you need to know.”

After confirming her identity with a quick peek at her driver’s license, Chase asks, “Are you going to comply, or do I need to call for backup, Miss Greyson?”

Huffing, she pushes open the door and steps out into the cool night air before slamming it shut. With her hands on her hips, she cocks her head and stares defiantly at him. “Is that better?”

“Yes, thank you.”

Unable to control himself, Chase rolls his eyes over her body and fights the urge to reach out and brush her glossy hair off her shoulder. When he manages to bring his gaze up to her face, momentarily distracted by the bare flesh spilling out over the top of her bra cup, he realizes why the name sounds so familiar.

“So are you going to tell me what this is all about, or what?”

“Have you been drinking tonight, ma’am?”

“Is that why I’m getting the third degree?” Running both hands through her hair, an act that juts her breasts farther out in front of her, she explains, “No, I haven’t been drinking…yet. But I sure as hell see a giant glass of wine in my very near future.”

He holds back a chuckle and continues his interrogation. “Do you always drive around wearing only heels and sexy lingerie?”

“What business is it of yours?” she fires back, unaffected by his comment. When he moves to reach for his radio, she groans and shuffles her feet. “Like I said, I’ve had a really shitty night.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“Fine, if you must know, I just broke up with my boyfriend.”

“While wearing practically nothing?”

“Of course. I find it softens the blow,” she retorts. Her hands raise to her sides as she strikes a seductive pose before they drop.

“I would think it would make things worse,” he disagrees, enjoying the slight look of offense on her face.

“Well, I learned my lesson. He kicked me out before I could get my clothes back on,” she explains with a shrug. “Next time I’ll keep a spare set in the car.”

“That’s probably wise,” he agrees, pretending to be preoccupied with her registration card. “You went to Shelton High, is that right, Miss Greyson?”

“I did.” She crosses her arms. “How is that relevant?”

“It’s not. I was curious.”

“So let me guess, you went there too?”

“Yes, ma’am.”
