Charlie is not the first shifter to be interested in West, but he certainly is the most persistent. It doesn’t help that they’re all living together. West needs a break from him, but he can’t get that right now, and it’s not as if Charlie is really doing anything to him. If West was in a different point in his life he might have actually been interested in the crab, but right now he needs to focus more on getting his degree than on starting a relationship.
Charlie wants West. That’s undeniable. He doesn’t even care that West used to work for Critters on Call. He likes him and he can’t explain why, or how come West doesn’t seem interested at all. Whatever West needs, Charlie wants to help him with it. He just needs the cheetah to give him a chance. He’s sure if he can impress West enough that eventually West will want him too.
Too bad the universe has other plans for them.
"If you're trying to flirt, you really need to work on it," West called out to Charlie. While West had been trying to study at the dining room table, Charlie had been pretending to watch TV, but every time West looked up, Charlie had been watching him.
Charlie stopped pretending not to be interested in him and came over to join him at the table. "What are you reading?"
West rolled his eyes. "A textbook."
“Stuff,” West replied gruffly. He really didn’t mind Charlie looking at him. Sometimes it was almost sweet to have his attention solely focused on him. But other times it was downright annoying, and West was starting to have enough of it.
“Everyone is gone. We’re all alone for the afternoon…” Charlie hinted suggestively.
West glanced up at him, then back at his textbook. “Not gonna happen. Sorry.”
Charlie instantly pouted, and maybe he thought he was trying to be cute, but he was coming off as being obnoxious. West lifted his lips.
“We could have fun,” Charlie pushed. “You know I’m a virgin. I’d like my first time to be with you.”
West grabbed his book and slammed it closed. It was time to get real with Charlie, for his own good. He loomed over him as he got up from the table. “I used to work for Critters on Call. You know what that means, right? That I was an escort? I got paid to take the virginity of guys a hundred times cuter than you are. I’ve fucked guys so hot you would cream your pants just looking at them. You don’t stand a chance. You have no hope. Do us both a favor and stop trying.” He took his book and stormed upstairs to the spare bedroom he was using. He hated how good his shifter hearing was as he listened to Charlie’s muffled sniffles. It wasn’t like he was trying to hurt him, but Charlie needed to know that being with him wouldn’t be any good for him. He was set to be mated to someone good, someone who didn’t come with a past. Someone who hadn’t worked for Critters on Call, even if it had only been for a night and he’d never actually done anything with a client.
West hung his head and leaned back against the door. He’d never done anything while he’d been working, but the taint followed him, and he didn’t want that passing on to Charlie too. He didn’t need that in his life, and West was sure people would find out. They’d already found out. His own mother knew before he’d ever gotten around to telling her. As much as this way sucked, it was better than hurting Charlie in the end, and that was all that would ever happen between them.
