Average Rating:

What happens when you get two artist romantics together? An impulsive marriage proprosal – and a woman who says yes (on the first date)!  While Jessica’s husband may not have intended for the words “marry me” to pop out on their first date, she surprised him even more by saying yes! That was over 14 years ago and they’re hoping for many more years together.

Jessica Coulter Smith began writing at an early age, but it wasn’t until 2008 that someone convinced her to have one of her stories published. When she received her acceptance letter in August 2008, it set her on an incredible journey, one she hopes will never end. In 2010, she decided to stay home with the kids and write full-time. It’s a decision she hasn’t regretted, and one that will hopefully result in many more stories to come.

Jessica loves to interact with her readers on Facebook and Twitter! But if you send her a friend request, be prepared for cute kitty pictures and kids getting into mischief, as well as updates on her writing.

Q: When did you decide to become a writer?

A: It isn’t something I really decided. I had a story to tell, sat down to write, and when I was finished a friend urged me to get it published. I’d enjoyed writing before that, but 2008 was the first time I’d written a full-length novel.

Q: Do you write full-time or part-time?

A: I write full-time. When I first started out, I wrote part-time and worked a full-time job. But I decide to be a full-time writer in 2010 and I haven’t regretted it.

Q: What’s your typical writing day like?

A: I don’t know that any of my days are ever alike, but I take the kids to school, come home and brew some coffee, and check emails and social media. By the time the coffee is ready and I’ve had half a cup, I’m ready to get to work. I write until it’s time for the kids to come home, then put my project aside until they go to bed.

Q: Do you write every day?

A: When I’m inspired, I write every day. But there are times I get a little burnt out and I’ll take a few days off to read and relax. Then I jump back in again. I try to write at least 3,000 words a day when I do write, but sometimes I don’t quite make it. Other times I’ve been known to write as much as 15,000 in a day.

Q: What does your family think of your writing?

A: I have a few cousins who have read my books and said they really enjoyed them, and a great-great-aunt, but I don’t believe anyone else has read them. My husband is really supportive, but he refuses to read a romance book. He’s more into sci-fi and alternate history stories.

Q: Do you drink anything in particular when you’re writing to keep up the creative flow?

A: I drink a ton of coffee when I’m writing. Not black though. I use either Peppermint Mocha creamer or, my newest discovery, Rum Cake creamer. I’ve been known to drink an entire pot and go back for more, depending on how many hours I’ve been at it.

Q: Do you have a lucky object you keep nearby? Or have a lucky shirt you wear when writing?

A: No, but I do have at least one, if not two, cats by me when I’m working. I find them to be a calming influence on me, when they aren’t trying to roll across the keyboard.

Q: You write romance. Do you consider your husband to be romantic?

A: He has his moments. <grin> He’s an artist and has been known to surprise me with drawings, and on occasion a poem. There isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t tell me loves me. I’m lucky to have someone like him in my life.
