Excerpt“Not a fan of the broccoli, huh?” Sissy rolled her eyes and made a grand gesture of sighing. “It’s my favorite dinner, except for the vegstible.” He looked away from Sissy for a moment, not wanting her to see him chuckle at her mispronunciation. When he had his faculties under control, Eric bent and whispered in Sissy’s ear. “Don’t worry. We’ll send your mommy into the kitchen during dinner and I’ll steal the broccoli off your plate.” He stood and winked. Tansy tapped a wooden spoon on the steel counter. “No secrets, you two. And if you have any funny plans, mister”—she waved the spoon at Eric—“I’ve got a time-out chair with your name on it.” He wanted to ask if she’d spank him instead, but held back. That line of thought would do nothing but get him in trouble. When the food was ready and the table had been set, they each carried a steaming bowl into the restaurant. The scene was like that of a fairytale. Daddy bear, momma bear, and baby bear, bringing in the porridge. Course, he wasn’t the daddy, just a stand-in for the night. But the image of the cohesive family they represented was, well, the most pleasant thought he could imagine. The only person missing was Goldilocks. “Is that a star, Mommy?” Sissy put down her bowl and peered out the restaurant’s large store-front window. From somewhere down the street flashes of bright white light disturbed the black of the night. Without warning, a loud KABOOM thundered outside and rocked the hotel from the foundation up. The flatware on the table rattled against the dishes. The near-full glasses shook, splashing drops of water in intricate patterns on the white tablecloth. And then the lights went out. |
