I’m a big fan of Diana Bold, and I loved the world that she created in this book. I found Masked Intentions to be full of so much more darkness and intrigue than I expected. There’s just something so desirable about forbidden fruit, which is what I felt when I read these pages and lived vicariously through Vanessa as she meets Prometheus, a masked stranger who has gathered a reputation for his risky endeavors that include snatching (and rescuing) children from where they’ve been trafficked into the life of prostitution. Whereas some people see him as a menace as he evades the law enforcement, others see him as a hero. Vanessa is one of those people who admire his bravery. Little does she realize that Prometheus has a lot more dark secrets than she could ever know, full of both external and internal scars. As though falling in love with a dark and beautiful masked stranger isn’t enough, the story takes a turn with the threat of others catching onto Prometheus’ true identity (including, Roger, Adrian’s malicious stepbrother, who owns the brothels that Prometheus has disrupted by rescuing Roger’s young, innocent meal-tickets). If Prometheus’ true identity is ever revealed to be Adrian Strathmore then it could put everybody he cares about in danger. This book had my heart pumping from beginning to end. I felt as though I was being hunted alongside Prometheus as he leapt from rooftop to rooftop, dodging gunfire – I committed myself vicariously through Vanessa to a dark romance with a man who’s face I’ve never seen – I lived her heartbreak in realizing that the man she loves has too much darkness inside of him to ever truly love her in return – and experienced Adrian’s pain as he feels abandoned by everyone he loves, along with his fear as it all comes crashing down in the end. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that. This wasn’t just a light predictable romance, it had so many unexpected twists that kept me on my toes and made me feel everything from fear, to steamy intrigue, to sadness, and joy. I found myself reading this long after I’d tell myself “Just one more chapter”.
