A change of career is in the cards, but will the disheartened detective survive the dangerous remnants from her former vocation to find her happily ever after with the man whose greatest fear is losing another woman in a heartbreaking tragedy?
Marcus Taylor, the oldest sibling in a family dominated by alpha males, is determined to discover the mystery surrounding their sassy office manager. Having lost his wife because of her penchant for risk-taking, the last thing he needs is to get involved with another woman carrying dangerous secrets.
Angel Weston, sent to work for the Taylor/Harper men until she is called to testify in a notorious criminal’s trial, finds it impossible to resist her hunkiest boss. But her greatest fear is that she’s brought with her danger from the violent criminal who’d already killed her parents. The last thing she wants is for her career choice to place anyone else at risk.
Angel Weston hung up the phone as a lead weight dropped into the pit of her stomach, triggering a painful gasp. The moment she’d dreaded for almost a year had arrived, and she’d just been summoned. A frigid wave of anxiety blanketed her from head to toe, and the blood drained from her face. She would have preferred Marcus Taylor not to be sitting across the office dissecting her with those cognac-crystal-brown eyes that saw everything, and that annoying frown.
“What’s wrong?” Her overprotective boss asked, having obviously noticed her distress.
She drew a deep breath and donned her lighthearted mask. Then she placed her desk phone on answering service mode, grabbed her purse from her drawer, and stood on less-than-steady legs. “Nothing’s wrong.”
She rubbed the tension from her forehead with trembling fingers. She and Marcus were the only ones at The Warehouse. Of all days, she had to be left with the bossiest and most controlling of the three partners. And the only one who stirred her body in inappropriate ways.
The security business had kicked off and kept everyone busy with clients, on and off the military-inspired training compound. Adam and Austin were in the field, while she and Marcus remained in the office. The three alpha men probably thought she hadn’t noticed that they’d stopped leaving her here alone.
“I have a headache.” No lie, and the throbbing is getting stronger by the minute.
Marcus stood and moved closer as she stepped toward the hallway with leaving in mind. He wrapped his large hand around her arm, above her elbow, with an edge of firmness but not aggression. Tingles shot over her nipples as the top of his fingers brushed against the side of her breast.
“Hold on a minute.” His frown deepened. “Where are you going?”
She pulled free with little resistance. His undeniable restraint on his raging protective proclivities gripped her chest. The scent of sandalwood and masculinity penetrated her senses, and a shiver shot through her body. He probably wanted to tie her to her chair and keep her within watching distance. “I need to go home. Don’t worry. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Angel…” Marcus’s jaw tightened, but his expression was one of concern. “I know you’re not being truthful. Please let me help you.”
His sincerity almost did her in. Tears filled her eyes, but she blinked them away before they rolled down her face and made things worse. “Unfortunately, you can’t help me with this.”
