No one treads these dark waters. They know better than to incite the ancient gators that drift within.

And yet I find a woman in my bayou, her body floating. Placed there by a threat that should never have reached me. And when she opens her eyes?
Blazing blue. Aquamarine, lit by impossible lightning.
A girl that the man I never wanted to see ever again knows about.
A man who understands her secrets, who holds his own.
A man I hate, though I loved him once.
The three of us are a volatile combination. Now, we have to leave the safety of these tepid waters for the dark city lights of New York. Remove the threat to the woman we both crave, and bring her back.
If she wants to stay.
F*ck knows what I’ll do if she leaves.
But if the threat follows her back here, they’ll find that not all the monsters are in New York.
Because the monster here is me. And no one touches what is mine.

I hissed at him, and he stared down. Shock rippled across reptilian features that retracted a fraction, along with his claws, though his yellow slitted eyes remained. Those, I suspected after all these years, were permanent. At least in public we’d be able to pass his eyes off as fancy contact lenses, as needed. His cock stood at almost full attention, though mercifully neither of them noticed.

“Luck?” he murmured, stroking softer looking thumbs that held ridges nonetheless across her cheeks. “What’s your name, small one?”

“Lee.” She blinked at him, her eyes sky blue, and smiled.

Fuck. Me. Color returned to her flash that fast, soft lines creeping around her tempting-as-fuck mouth. The fact she was naked between us slammed into me. Suddenly the elder of us wasn’t the only one in the room with an uncontrolled arousal situation.

“Lee,” I murmured. “Anything else, precious one?”

She coughed, the moment shattering as half the swamp reappeared from her lungs and splattered the floor. “Leisha,” she managed, pressing her hands to Ramon’s thighs to hold herself up.

He lifted her from me, wiping her face with a shirt he pulled from a chair. The thing almost crackled, and I wondered how long it had been since he last wore clothes.

The monster within us.

Not that I was one to preach on that front.

“Who chased you, Leisha?” Her pretty name tumbled across my tongue, sweet and tasty. I trailed my fingers along her spine, unable to stop touching her and cursed myself in the same breath. She’s damaged. Fucking hurt. They’ve hurt her. I knew that, and I still couldn’t keep my fucking claws to myself.

Ramon’s gaze locked onto mine, his personal brand of possessiveness raging there. But something else vied within his gaze, something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

An invitation.

He knew he couldn’t care for her alone, because he’d withdrawn from the world for so long.

I hadn’t.

I nodded my acceptance.

“Tell us, little storm. Explain to the big ol’ gator here who you are, so he understands. Use small words.” I smirked at Ramon over her head, because I was that sort of an asshole.

Ramon bared teeth at me that were larger than they should be. My cock ached, needing to feel their graze on my length.

He laughed. “Stop flirting, pup.”

Leisha looked between us, a flash of blue lightning shooting across her eyes. I watched, fascinated, unable to tell if she was frightened or aroused, though neither should be possible in her current situation.

“Dress her,” I murmured over my shoulder, then addressed the girl who had never objected to being in my arms. “Let’s get you warm. Warmer,” I corrected myself when she huffed against my chest. “And fed. Then, you’re going to talk, and we will listen, precious one.”

Those sky eyes blazed at me, filled with the sort of potential I hadn’t seen in a long time.

And more than one organ in my scared, ancient body ached.
