Excerpt

After a particularly shitty Friday where I’d struggled through an exam that I hadn’t prepared for and argued with my mother over the phone because she’d told me I was “unappreciative” of the sacrifices she and my father had made for me to go to college, I was looking forward to spending the weekend with Alex. At least at his place I could forget about school and my parents and my life for a while and just enjoy myself.

But when I got to Alex’s house, he took one look at me and frowned. “You cut your hair.”

I’d gotten a haircut earlier that week and told the barber to cut it pretty low because I just wanted a change. Plus, I figured I could add more time between haircuts if I got more chopped off during each visit. The chop had been more severe than I’d thought it would be, and at first, I thought I’d made a huge mistake. And when my roommate saw me and told me I looked like a Marine, I felt even worse. But after a day or so, I got over it and came to appreciate my shorter hair.

“Yeah,” I said.

Alex folded his arms across his chest. “I don’t like it.”

I laughed, figuring he’d laugh back and we’d forget about it, but when he stayed silent, my heart sank.

“Okay,” I said slowly.

I normally wore my hair longer and I knew Alex preferred it that way. Soon after he and I started seeing each other, he’d told me that he found my dark hair and gray eyes very attractive. Still, I didn’t think he’d have an issue with me getting a freaking haircut.

Alex stared at me like he was waiting for me to say something else. If he was expecting me to say, “I’m sorry,” he would be waiting a long time. I wasn’t about to apologize for getting my own hair cut.

Finally, he sighed and said, “I wish you had told me you were going to get your hair cut off.” He ran a hand across my scalp. “What brought this on?”

I shrugged. “I just wanted a change.”

“A change? You’ve been butchered. Where did you go? To some cheap place on campus?”

“Well ... yeah.”

Alex shook his head and backed away from me. “You need a new barber, a real one. I’ll pay for it.”

That insulted me. “I don’t need you to pay for my haircuts.”

He laughed. “Apparently you do.” He touched my hair. “I don’t even know if I can get hard for you with your hair like this.”

I pulled away from him. “Do you want me to leave?”

He rolled his eyes. “Of course not.”

Despite Alex’s claim that my haircut would probably prevent him from getting an erection, he got hard without any problem, although when he fucked me, I could tell he wasn’t totally into it. Honestly, neither was I.

“Maybe I should have put a bag over my head,” I said half-jokingly as he rolled away from me.

“Maybe you should have,” Alex said and my feelings were hurt all over again.
