Dr. Ray Carmichael is a wealthy African-American doctor and political activist running for office on the platform that the brutality and corruption of the local police force is out of control. Nick Sorenson is a white cop who grew up poor and almost lost his life in gangs and crime before turning his life around by joining the police force.

When Ray’s brother is beaten by a couple of police officers after a traffic stop, Nick is the Internal Affairs detective put in charge of investigating the incident. Dr. Carmichael's obvious distrust of the police force rubs Nick the wrong way, and the man becomes a pain in his neck. Too bad, because neither of them can deny their attraction to each other.

Ray has Nick removed from the case when he decides he’d rather date the man than fight with him. In spite of their differences, they begin an affair and grow closer. Until an explosive incident at a family gathering puts nagging doubts in Nick’s head -- he's not sure if they can overcome the differences that separate them.

When Nick is about to lose everything important to him, will he realize his budding relationship with Ray is worth trying to see the other side?

Ray leaned toward Nick at the same moment Nick leaned toward him. Their lips met, touched, scorched across each other. Ray's lips moved to the pulse of the other man's throat, searing a path there to his collar bone. Nick had on way too many clothes. Ray's hands found the hem of Nick's shirt and tugged upward.

"Dinner?" Nick gasped, tilting his head, providing Ray better access to his throat.

"Later," Ray said. He yanked the shirt over Nick's head and dropped it in a pile at their feet. His fingers reached for the belt at the other man's waist.

"Let me." Nick's hands pushed Ray's away. Nick first kicked off his black loafers before he undid the belt, and then dropped his pants, stepping neatly out of them.

Ray immediately admired the obvious erection straining against his boxers. He swallowed, trying to calm his racing pulse. He didn't want to rush this, didn't want to embarrass himself with too much excitement.

"Lube and condoms?" he asked, going to work on removing his own clothes.

Nick nodded. "Be right back." He headed into the bathroom.

Ray supposed he ought to ask Nick who was fucking who. For some reason, Ray had assumed he would be bending Nick over, but, it was entirely possible Nick had the same assumption about him. He pulled the sheet and blanket down to the foot of the bed.

"Here," Nick said from behind him. He handed a foil wrapper to Ray. Pre-lubed, Ray noted, though Nick also had a bottle in his hand.

Ray tossed the items on the bed, and then pulled Nick into his arms. He lowered his mouth to Nick's. He quaked with need when the other man's tongue slid inside. Slowly, he maneuvered them until they fell onto the bed, Nick pinned under him.

"Wow," Nick murmured, when Ray allowed him a moment to breathe. "You have a beautiful body." He blue eyes gazed up and down Ray.

"Not half as beautiful as yours," Ray said. "You are fucking gorgeous."

Nick laughed, and then the laugh turned into a moan when Ray continued kissing him. He grabbed Nick's wrists and held them over his head, assaulting him with kisses and nibbles everywhere. He was on fire, more turned on then he'd been in a hell of a long time.

"Want you," he whispered in Nick's ear. He felt the other man shake.

Nick made a little soft sighing noise and then Ray released Nick's wrists to reach for the foil packet. He tore it open, rolling it on his own hard cock. Nick didn't protest, so Ray decided they were likeminded after all.
