Excerpt

My heart beats so loud, I’m sure everyone in the room can hear it. The sound of her sniffling has set all three of us in motion, but when we reach the bed, Kamden and Deklan both look at me. What do they want from me? I’ve always been better at the emotional stuff, but this is all new to me too.

I get on the bed beside her and take her left hand in mine, clasping it gently. Watching her, I see a tear track down her cheek.

“Please don’t cry. Nothing is wrong,” I say gently.

She turns her brown gaze toward me. Tears are still pooled in them as she quickly assesses me. Her eyes widen slightly before her gaze finally tracks to first Deklan, and then Kamden. Her eyes are as wide as saucers. I squeeze her hand in mine again to draw her attention back to me.

“Why don’t we head downstairs and talk for a while?” I ask. “You must have a lot of questions.”

She shakes her head but doesn’t look away from me.

“Nothing. Really?” Deklan asks, his deep voice rough in the quiet room.

The girl doesn’t look away from me as she answers. “I was taught to not ask questions. I am here to fulfill my duties and to make my Partner happy.” Her melodious voice washes over me.

I can see the rage as it crosses Kamden’s face, and I feel exactly the same way. Who the fuck has been around this woman, teaching her that she shouldn’t ask questions? That her happiness doesn’t matter?

“Hell no.” Kamden growls before picking her up off the bed.

Her entire body goes taut, but she doesn’t make a sound as he carries her into the walk-in closet.
